Does upgrading an avamar client require a reboot?

We have several 4.x clients and need to upgrade them to 6.x.  While re-installing the client manually on a SQL server it required a reboot.  Is this typically the case, or is it just this way on a SQL server?

Hi Matthew,

As I know in general, we don't need to reboot client server after upgraded avamar client. Because, we cannot find any information with need to reboot client server when make avamar client upgrading. You can refer “Uninstalling and Upgrading the Avamar Windows Client” section of Avamar Client User Guide as following.

For your case, I guess it is required by SQL server service, so, you have to reboot the client server.

Hope can hepls.

Uninstalling and Upgrading the Avamar Windows Client

Unlike other platforms, previous versions of Avamar Windows Client software do not have to be explicitly uninstalled before a new version can be installed. If you attempt to install the Avamar Windows Client on a computer that already has it installed, you will be prompted during installation to select one of the following choices:

1. Upgrade current Avamar Windows Client installation to the new version.

2. Remove old Avamar Windows Client installation.

If you decide to remove the old installation, you need to rerun the installation file to install the new version. The current installation session becomes an “uninstall” session, then terminates.

You can also use the Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs feature to completely uninstall the Avamar Windows Client.

IMPORTANT: If you need to switch to an older version of the Avamar Windows Client software, you must completely uninstall the existing version before installing the older version. Switching to an older version cannot be done by using the upgrade mechanism.

Installing / upgrading certain plug-ins may require a reboot (the Exchange GLR plug-in installs a driver, for example) but upgrading the file system client itself should not require a reboot.
