Latest stable version, compatibility and upgrade path
Hello.
We currently have Avamar 7.1.2-21 and we are planning to upgrade. In order to prepare for the upgrade, we need to first choose a version, assess any changes and/or limitations, as well as impact of the newer version, and then plan the upgrade action regarding the upgrade path.
So, what is the latest stable version? Are there any precedences as an upgrade path, regarding the present version? What are the more expressive differences and limitations noticed by customers?
Is there a compatibility comparison table between versions, to see more easily what are the new functionalities/compatibilities as well as the end of support of any technology that may cause impact?
Thank you.

Not sure but guess we have no DD. I'll check that with the team that will upgrade the Avamar Server.
Now I came across another issue. I've installed the upgrade-clients-download v7.2.1.32 and been upgrading clients successfully. But it turns out that the combined proxy isn't on the downloads list at the server.
I was not able to figure out how to obtain it and if it is supposed not to be there.
I know that since 7.2 there is a way to automate the proxy deployment from the Administrator, but the manual deployment is still available. Either way, Avamar Administrator 7.2 isn't available for download either at the server. Couldn't find any lead on the Avamar 7.2 manual that could help.
How do I install the proxies?

Hey,
Iam not sure why porxy .ova is not listed under downloads for you. It should be there.
You can contact support to get the proxy template file or share a location with me on online drive, let me know the proxy version you need. Hopefully I can provide you this file.
Yes, with 7.2, we can deploy multiple proxies from Avamar Administrator itself. But most of the time I do it manually as I need to do it only sometimes for 1 or 2 proxies.
Regards,
Pawan

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've had this reply half-composed for a few days but didn't get a chance to finish it.
If you click the Server button on the main screen in the GUI, then open the Data Domain tab, you will see a list of any attached Data Domain systems.
The proxy and the Avamar Administrator GUI installer are included in the server install or upgrade package, not in the client package.
However, as long as the client catalog has been updated, you should be able to deploy newer proxies. If you need a copy of the OVA, please get in touch with support. The decision to include the proxy in the install and upgrade packages was made because the developers wanted to ensure that there was always a proxy available to be deployed by the proxy deployment manager.

The Avamar Administrator Server and Avamar Administrator GUI are (unfortunately) tied at the hip. They must be the same version.

Ok. Thank you Ian.
I'll have to keep one machine with an old java version, then...
And that's all for now. Upgrade will not take place any time soon so there isn't much more I can do about any of this at the moment.
Thank you for the help. Regards.

Hi guys.
Its been a while since the last post. I haven't replied because the upgrade process is on hold. It turns out that the AER is now discontinued, and last available version is not compatible with newer Avamar versions. So we will have to migrate from AER to other solution first.
About the proxy OVA, I guess I'll wait for the upgrade, and only then update the proxies. I just thought it would be available on the downloads at Avamar server after installing the package, so I could update all proxies while waiting.
In the mean while I have another issue. Avamar Administrator 7.1.2 console will not work with recent Java 1.8 releases. This has become a security issue on my company and had to remove old java versions and keep only the last one. Now Avamar console won't work. And even after installing upgrade packages on Avamar, the console available for download doesn't update for a newer version. I guess it's tied to the Server version.
My question is, If I get a console version 7.2.x, will it work for server 7.1.2? And do you know if java 1.8 will work?
Thank you!
