I'm not an Avamar expert but I have worked a lot with StoragePoint on our 2010 farms. You should be backing up your BLOB data via normal file services type of backup. The Avamar backup should only be grabbing what SQL data still exists on the SQL server. I have performed a recovery to a new farm with this successfully (without Avamar).
BTW we've had to pull all of our data out of StoragePoint for our larger farm due to some other issues. That content database is 250G. Other than backup times and log growth, we have not found any issues and this is running in a completely VMware environment.
