Web Restore - Indexing never completes
Hello folks,
I would like to login to the web restore interface and search for a specific file to restore. I keep getting this error message below, i can select "no" to browse only mode many times but this never completes and eventually times out. Any ideas ?
Thank you

The last time I saw this it was due to a client having a large number of backups (400) which needed re-indexing by the DT/LT service after the server was upgraded. The re-indexing took 10 minutes in that case.
The message labels here are not very informative. Selecting NO will “Wait for indexing” whilst YES will continue to “Backup only mode” where restorable jobs will not be visible. (The labels should be improved in v7.1)
If the indexing process times out whilst waiting for completion I would suggest opening a support case (quote escalation 7266 - it might help speed up the process).
In the meantime, as a workaround, you could perform the restore using the Avamar Administrator GUI.

Hello nr,
I need this functionality for end users, these folks will not have access to Avamar Administrator GUI. They need to be able to login to Web Restore page and be able to search for a file that was deleted and then restore it. It looks like unless the index works, you can't search and can only browse.

Hi dynamox - yes, unfortunately the drawback of the workaround is that it can only be carried out by those with Administrator GUI access.
As far as I can tell this specific behaviour doesn't appear to be documented in any existing knowledge articles or escalations. To understand the root cause and fix this we would need to investigate why the browse is taking so long and eventually timing out.
If you open an SR it would be helpful to note roughly how many backups this client is storing on the server
mccli backup show --name/path//clientname.domain.com | wc -l

after talking to support i have to admit i am so disappointed in Avamar's lack of basic functionality. So support told me that indexing is taking a long time because it can't really handle any clients that have a lot of data. So i took a relatively small clients (270G, 119k files) and it's having the same issue. So that means that there is not way for customer to search for a particular file.
Use case: I have a customer who deleted a file, they don't know when the file was deleted, they don't know the exact location of the file, they just know it used to be on drive letter E:\ . How does one find the last backup when this file was backed up and restore it ? Avamar Administrator GUI does not take any wildcards, avtar --list is horribly slow. I used to manage HP DataProtector back in the 90's and to find a file in its catalog was piece of cake. Please tell me i am missing something and there is a way to find a file that was deleted and restore it.
