when will spare node take effect

is spare node just like a spare disk in storage system? does it store any information at first? when will it take over the failed node? how can it distinguish a failed node or a shutdown node?

1) is spare node just like a spare disk in storage system? does it store any information at first?

The spare node starts off empty of any backup date. It's initially just configured with the OS a few Avamar directories and is reachable over the network.

2) when will it take over the failed node? how can it distinguish a failed node or a shutdown node?

When a node goes down the spare does not automatically take over. Create a support case and have an EMC support engineer investigate the root cause of the issue. If necessary they will replace the bad node with the spare.

There are different ways of doing this but the quickest way, if there's a hardware issue on the downed node, is to swap the disks from the bad chassis to the spare chassis. Never do this by yourself though - always give support a call to be sure.

Hope that helps

This is the first time I know that you can just switch the hard drives, it sounds logical, then you will have to name the spare node chasis as the one that faild, then you have to use same ip address too...
Is it like that Nicholas??

thanks a lot. so take over will only happen manually by EMC staff.

OscarG - There's no need to rename the node or change any networking configuration as that will all be preserved on the hard disks from the original node.

This is just a very basic description of the process. Please always contact support if a node fails so a full analysis can be done.
