Windows 2008 server backup having EFI partition
Hi All ,
We are stuck in middle of implementing the Avamar into our production backup environment , currently we are running on Avamar version 6.0.2.153 and some of our Windows 2008 R2 server is having EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface)partition created , as per the compatibility matrix provided by Avamar , EFI partition backup via VSS is still not compatible till 6.1 .
Is there any approach or work around I can use the Avamar for taking those server backup on which EFI partition is created .
File system backup running successfully only problem I am having if some how I need to recover the server which is not possible via Avamar
Regards

Hello Anderson ,
Sorry I am unable to deduce the solution provided by you , as I was looking the approach of performing the Windows 2008 Server recovery procedure of those server which are having EFI partition created on it .
If I simply take the VSS backup of that server it failed as EFI partition is not compatible with the Avamar VSS backup

It's possible to use (most) Avamar 6.1 clients with a 6.0 server if the client catalog on the server is upgraded. Installing the client download package will remove the 6.0 download links from the Documents and Downloads page, however, so be sure to save a copy of the 6.0 installers you use in your environment or plan to use in future.
Also note that the 6.1 SQL plugin requires a 6.1 server and the client and plugin versions must match so you can't use the 6.1 version of the client to back up SQL unless your server is upgraded to 6.1.

Hello Anderson,
Kindly confirm the below
Backup Strategy :-
Windows server backup used for taking the backup of System state backup and dumping the backup into the Data drive of the sever , and all File system of the server is back up via Avamar .
Server Recovery procedure :-
Install the OS and Avamar client on the server .
Restore the C: drive via Avamar and restoring the System state via Windows server backup utility .
Opting same recovery procedure as we did for the Windows server 2003 recovery via NT backup , kindly correct me if I am wrong .
Also have you tested the above approach in any of your test environment for Windows 2008 R2 server .

I misunderstood your question, I apologize. Support for EFI will be included in an upcoming release.
In the meantime, I have heard that some customers install Windows Server Backup on EFI clients and create a run-before script that calls wbamdin.exe to generate a system state backup file. This backup file would be backed up to the Avamar server during the file system backup. This is similar to how System State backup and restore was handled on Server 2003. Details on how to use the run-before functionality are in the Administration guide.

Yes, this is correct.
I have not tested this approach myself. This approach is not officially supported by EMC but it should work.

Just to add to this, I have used this before and it works.
