FX2S - FD332 Assignment

Hi,

I have a Dell FX2S with the following:

2 x FC630

2 x FD332

Here is the current assignment:

Slot1 = FC630
Slot 2 = FC630
Slot 3 = FD332
Slot 4 = FD332

I need to have 2 x FD332 assigned to Slot 2. Slot 1 FC630 will be a standalone server with storage on the local drives.

Can this be done?

Hi,

Unfortunately, you cannot assign two FD332 sleds to a single FC630 in Slot 2. Here’s why:

  • Each FD332 sled connects to the midplane and can be mapped to one compute sled at a time, but the FX2 architecture only allows one FD332 per FC630.
  • The chassis supports up to two FD332 sleds total, but they must be mapped individually to different compute nodes (or both to the same node if only one compute sled is installed).
  • With two FC630s installed, each can only have one FD332 assigned.

Hi Joey,

The way that FX2S is designed, it can only have the following configurations using FC630:

2 x FC630 (Slot 1 + Slot 2)
2 x FD332 (Slot 3 + Slot 4)

How you can have 3 x FD332, as this configuration:

1 x FC630 (Slot 1)
3 x FD332 (Slot 2,3,4)

MightyJainesh,

My understanding is that FD332 in Slot 3 can be mapped to Slot 1 or Slot 2, and FD332 in Slot 4 can also be mapped to Slot 1 or Slot 2, but you cannot assign both FD332 sleds exclusively to Slot 2 while leaving Slot 1 completely disconnected from them unless you configure mapping manually.

You can assign both FD332 to slot 2, but with limitations:

  • Using the CMC Storage Assignment feature, you can map both FD332 sleds to the same compute sled (Slot 2).
  • Slot 1 FC630 will then have no access to FD332 storage and will rely only on its internal drives.

Let me know if this helps.

Where in cmc i can change the mapping ? Can you provide screenshot or steps? I been looking around and i don't have CMC storage assignment.

Hello,

On the Dell FX2/FX2s chassis, there is no option in the CMC to “remap” storage sleds to different compute sleds. The storage assignment is physical and automatic based on sled placement:

Each slot is divided into front (compute sled) and rear (storage sled) halves.

The FD332 storage sled can only pair with the compute sled in the same slot.

CMC does not provide a GUI or CLI feature to override this mapping.

That feature exists on some blade chassis (like Dell M1000e with shared storage), but FX2 does not support dynamic storage mapping.

The FX2 midplane wiring is fixed:

Slot 1 compute → Slot 1 storage

Slot 2 compute → Slot 2 storage, etc.

Just to confirm

Chris response is incorrect. The mapping cannot be done on fx2s.

It will auto map the fd332 to fc630 based on which slot they are plugged into.

Hi,

Chris's respond might be misleading.

Here's something to clear the thoughts, this is the user guide for FD332:  https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-fx2/fd332ownersmanual/split-dual-host-mapping-configuration?guid=guid-b2c391bb-351c-4e08-8869-ff4251ecfc17&lang=en-us According to Chris's respond, actually FD332 in Slot 3 can be mapped to both FC630 for redundancy.

And yes, you were referring to Figure 2. Single PERC/HBA joined mode mapping configuration—four-bay chassis (one compute sled) https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-fx2/fd332ownersmanual/single-perchba-controller-and-joined-mode-mapping-configurations?guid=guid-2213e915-d90d-4323-b3df-c1e6b20ceecd&lang=en-us on the configuration if it's possible for Slot 3 and 4 FD332 to be mapped to Slot 1 FC630, there's is no information if it can. I am unable to verify the configuration as I can't the same configuration in the lab nor I can find information in documents.
