Celerra NDMP with TSM and EDL

I desire to setup a NDMP backup environment for Celerra NAS shares. Plan is to use TSM v5.3 (running on AIX 5.3) as the NDMP client, the Celerra Datamover(Dart 5.5) as the NDMP server with accessible VTL units on an EDL via SAN as the backup storage media.

Has anyone done this specific setup and could share their experience and summarize the setup requirements.

this would NOT be a 3-way NDMP backup, as I want to access the VTL units via FC SAN, I believe this is referred to as a 'local' NDMP backup.

Any help is appreciated.

shouldnt be a big deal - there are at least two customers here on the forum that I remember use TSM and NDMP

Just take a look at some of the older posts

Dont be discouraged though - there were some questions/problems there stemming from more complicated setups and environments

... not exactly the thing you are looken for;)

We're using Dart 5.5 with TSM v5.4 running on a TSM server running AIX/Power hardware and FC tapes and disks.
Backup is managed via scripting the administrative client running on a Linux PC. Transport is iSCSI (the reason why TSM v5.3 didn't work for us), bandwidth is 30-70MB/s.

This backup still doesn't run stable enough to be trusted, but we're working on it. IBM supports in its docs only Netapp filers:(

Sorry, I forgot to remark we save directly to tape and to TSM storage pools.

works just fine, I got TSM 5.3.5 (AIX 5.2) backing up Celerra CFS14/NS80 to CDL4100. EMC has a good document on how to set it up , but also take a look at IBM documents. Very straightforward process for what you are trying to do. Holler back if you have specific questions.

Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Hardware/Platforms Documentation > Celerra Network Server > General Reference

look for document "Configuring NDMP Backups on Celerra 5.6.36 A01"

page 100

Definitely more questions ...

I don't have visiblity to the TSM side of the required config.. only on the Celerra side.. I provided my associate dealing with TSM the doc you referenced.

We are at the point where we have paths to the EDL and devices are assigned to the datamovers from the EDL, do we have to create the VTLU's on the datamovers in order to give TSM the devices names as described in the Configuring NDMP Backups to Disk on Celerra manual?

yes, zoning is good, from the Celerra side I see the HBA bound to the EDL path..
unfortunately I have another guy dealing with the EDL side and I'm not experienced with that side.. nor TSM.. I'll forward the questions.

but.. yes they showed me the datamovers on the EDL console.

pardon the ignorance.. what do you mean by "Was IT(what is it? TSM?) configured as client and assigned to virtual library"... I assume you are referring to the EMC manual steps to configure the TSM side. If you have had success with those procedures I will ask my associates to verify everything there.

what library are you emulating ...is everything zoned correctly ? Did you see Celerra HBA login to the EDL console ? Was it configured as client and assigned to virtual library? Are you sharing virtual library within TSM and Celerra datamovers ? Sorry ..just trying to get more info :)

If you can try to reboot or failover/failback your data mover

If that doesnt help double-check fibre-channel speed, zoning and EDL config

THat's what I thought.. but when running server_devconfig -p -s -n it does not detect the EDL devices

In response to Rainer..
I've got 3 datamovers zoned to EDL.. none of them see devices with a server_devconfig -p -s -n , I cannot failover/reboot any at this time. I'll verify the FC connectivity as well.. EDL ports and DM ports are on same switch.

if you have the drives assign to the datamovers and you ran server_devconfig commands to rescan for the tape drives, you will need to give your TSM admins output from your devconfig command, for example:

server_devconfig server_3 -list -scsi -nondisks | grep -E "tape|jbox"

jbox1 c144t0l0 jbox IBM 03584L32 4.0213001R9FO0020500
tape2 c144t0l1 tape IBM ULT3580-TD2 333K
tape3 c144t0l2 tape IBM ULT3580-TD2 333K
tape4 c144t0l3 tape IBM ULT3580-TD2 333K
tape5 c144t0l4 tape IBM ULT3580-TD2 333K

got this info ?

TSM admin will need to use these information when they define paths for your EDL drives. Let me know how far you got ..

no, that manual is for using the Celerra VTL functionality, which is different from using a EDL

After you have setup your EDL drives and zoned them correctly all you have to do on the Celerra side is:

create a NDMP user + password
set buffer size
make sure server_devconfig can see the EDL tape drives correctly

Just use the "Configuring NDMP Backups on Celerra" manual

i actually meant Celerra HBA being registered as client in EDL console, but sounds like that's already been done and virtual library along with the tape drives have been presented to Celerra HBA ?

so yeah ..gotta get those tapes/juke to show up on the datamover before you can proceed further. So you have run these commands and still no luck ?

server_devconfig server_x -probe -scsi -nondisks
server_devconfig server_x -create-scsi -nondisks
server_devconfig server_x -list-scsi -nondisks
