CIFS server in "My Network Places"
Hello guys,
i have a customer who insists on being able to browse to my CIFS server via "My Network Places". I do not see my CIFS servers in "Network Places" when i browse to my active directory name . Is there a netbios paramater or something that i need to enable ?
Thanks

Problems like this are from a long time ago:
see emc28309
In Microsoft TCP Networking, every "subnet" on a Network must have an NT or Windows machine running the "Browser Service" if you expect to "see" and then "browse" computernames [and resources] using Network Neighborhood. If the "Browser Service" is running, whenever the Celerra CIFS service is started, it broadcasts a request to register with the local network's "Master Browser" service. Once the Celerra has registered itself, then the NT or Windows machine serving as the "Master Browser" service will add the Celerra CIFS server to the "Browse List" and its computername and 'shares' will become accessible from "Network Neighborhood".

It's a pretty large environment ...although new windows servers show up ok. I have one client that's deploying this new application that the only way it can connect to a share is by browsing "My Network Places", you can't use unc path, you can't use traditional mapped network drive. Very odd application.

Windows browser elections are notorious for not working well in very large environments. Not sure how many windows hosts you have but that could be part of the issue.

correct subnet masks?
Try to configure a WINS server for the Celerra compname if this is not already done.

In CIFS-CIFS Servers tab, you should be able to see the NetBios Name and select it to view the CIFS server properties.
Is it joined to the domain?

Computer accounts are created automatically when CIFS servers are joined to AD. CIFS servers are left in default "EMC Celerra\Computers" OU

AFAIK what appears in the Network Places is dependent on Windows browsing
I'm afraid you have to troubleshoot this - its an ugly part of Windows networking
there are Windows tools (not sure if they are in the resource kit) to hunt down who the current browse master for that subnet is what info he has
It its just this one client you can just add the Celerra there manually
open "My Network Places" - the first entry should be called "Add Network Place" and leads you into a wizard to do this
