Using DFS on NS42G and joining NT4
Hi,
we are in the process of setting up our new NS42G's and we are facing some problems.
We, unfortunately, still have a Windows NT4 domain in place, therefore we have to join the CIFS servers, created on the NS42G, into that NT4 domain to use it properly.
We additionally have the demand to use DFS on the NS42G CIFS servers, but it looks like, that the DFS feature is only available, when you create the CIFS server in Windows2000/2003 mode. This sounds comprehensible to me, because DFS is only available on Windows 2000 and 2003 machines in the Microsoft world.
But it looks like you can not join an NT4 domain when you have to choose the "Windows2000/2003" for the Celerra CIFS server, which you obviously can in the Microsoft world!!
Can someone give me a hint or guide me through the process on how to join an NT4 domain and use DFS as well?

I dont see the documentation explicitly stating that you need to be joined to a Win2k/Win2k3 domain, but I could understand it.
did you try ?

if you just want to use the Celerra as a DFS leaf node you dont have to configure anything extra. Just point your Microsoft DFS root to the CIFS shares on the Celerra.
The configuration work described in the "Managing Celerra for a
Multiprotocol Environment" is when you want to create a standalone DFS root on the Celerra itself
what are you trying to achieve ?

we are intending to use the Celerra as a DFS root server.
We would like to create a single share on the system pointing to several other shares on the same or other Celerra servers.

we tried to join a domain, but the Celerra is only trying to join an AD domain when you choose Windows2000/2003 to my knowledge via the WebGUI and via the command line and not NT4 domain.
But possibly we did not choose the correct commands.
Can someone post an example on what we should try?

we setup the CIFS server in "NT4 mode" and joined the NT4 domain successfully.
When we now try to create a DFS root with the Distributed File System Snap-In from Microsoft Management Console we get the error message "The server could either not be contacted or it is not Windows 2000 or above.".
When we install the server in Windows2000/2003 mode, the wizard does not produce this message and we are able to create a DFS root, but we can not join NT4 domain in that mode.

If you use the GUI just get the server_cifs command it executed with a "tail /nas/log/cmd_log"
Actually what I mean is if you tried to create a NT4 CIFS server and enabled/created a DFS root there

In either case you of course have to use the NetBIOS name

great job! That does work!
I used dfsutil and was able to create the DFS Root.
Many thanks!
