Volume configuration and performance

Hello,

I have newly configured Celerra NS120 with Clariion CX4-120 FC on the back end.

I created 2 RAID groups (RAID 4+1) 1.4 TB each, then created  two LUNs per RAID group:

LUN16 (700GB), LUN17 (766GB): RG1

LUN18 (700GB), LUN19(766GB): RG2

I distributed the LUNs in the RAID group on two storage processors in the aim of gaining performance, further, added to meta volumes:

V16 using LUN16 and LUN19

V17 using LUN 17 and LUN18

Finally created two filesystems 1.4 TB each and shared on CIFS server.

we compare the Celerra performance to an NT server with RAID5 volume (same disk type and speed) the NT server performance where quite better in sequential and random reads/writes.

I am new in EMC world, please on the what is going wrong in my setup.

you help is highly appreciated

Cheers

Oussama

Did you use any striping?

If no, then the 1,4TB FS will only use your v16 and all IOs will end in LUN 16 or Lun 19.

It will be used as a concatenateds volume ...

Peter thanks for your replay.

I had already setup another Filesystem as follow:

Create RAID group RAID% 4+1.

Create 4 LUNs equal sizes, distribute the LUNs ownership on SPA and SPB.

Used the 4 disks volume to create a stripe volume (stripe size 32 KB), then using it to create a meta volume and finally create the FS.

the performance is almost the same, a NT server share is giving better performance.

It seems like the perormance issue is related to CIFS/Network configuration more than the storage config, I compaired the transfer FTP transfer rate to CIFS share, ftp rate was up to 47 MB/s from a workstation against 15 mb/s for transfering files through the CIFS share.

I checked the Netwok interface speed on the celerra manager are set to 1000FD same for the eth channels. the netwok team confirmed that the switch's portes speed configuration is not set to auto.

PS: the Ws are running Windows XP 64bits

Your feed back is appreciated
