Centera Gen4 Roadmap

Hi,

We're currently using Centera Gen4 and our maintenance is due in a couple of months, based on my research Centera gen 4 will be EOSL by 2013. IF i were to migrate now to another EMC platform what will be the most suitable replacement for Centera in terms of functionality?  Is it VNX? DD Archiver or Isilon?

Thanks

Hi

For thhe current models of Gen4LP Hardware, Nodes with 4 or 8 TB per Node, no EOSL Date has been communicated yet. You can expect these nodes and such a system to be supported for at least five more years.

A Centera to Centera migration will also not move all your data through your application!

Best regards, Holger

There's no 4 or 8TB per node for current Gen 4 only 1 TB or 2 TB node, at least in this part of the world

Hi

You are absolutely right about Gen4 but the current models are Gen4LP Nodes. These are supported and EMC has communicated at EMC World, that new code releases will be published in 2012. C* 4.2 has just been published at the beginning of the month.

Centera is still your archive platform of choice.

If you want to migrate to something else you have to see what other devices your archive application supports and migrate your data through your application.

The migration scenario when remaining on Centera is either CICM, C2C or a plain and simple replication chain and restore. The last one is what we typically use combined with additional checks that everything is correctly migrated.

Best regards, Holger

Hi,

My reseller has advised

"The Centera product goes EOL March 2018, so no more hardware can be purchased for these systems. EOS is March 2023 and EOSL 2029"

So with that in mind, what are EMC recomending?  What are people planning to do?

Kully

Hi

"EOL" = Product cannot be sold anymore

"EOSL" = End of Maintenance (=EOL+5 years!)

There is no "EOS"

Elastic Cloud Storage is the logical successor vor Centera Systems, as it supports the CAS protocol of Centera. ECS will respond to the Application in the same way Centera would have done
