checking cache settings on a LUN
Dear forum members,
since I've been out of the Clariion world for a while, this particular issue is bothering me. I have 5 CX4's up and running here. These CX4's are running Flare 30.509.
1 Particular host's admin is complaining about performance issues on a certain VM. This VM is running Oracle on Windows 2003.
I noticed that when I start Unisphere and check the cache status of the LUNs this VM is using I have 3 options to enable or disable:
- Enable caching
- SP Read Cache
- SP Write Cache
Both SP A and B Cache check marks seem to indicate both Read and Write Cache are enabled, but the "overall" setting "Enable Caching" is off. When I enable this one, Unisphere asks me whether I want FAST Cache turned on or off and this puzzles me, since this system doesn't have FAST Cache. Is this a bug in Unisphere or something ?
Should I enable this top check mark or is this really only valid with FAST Cache installed ? And if this is onlyy valid with FAST Cache, then why is this not greyed out ?
On a system with FAST Cache there's another check mark which clearly indicates whether or not I can enable or disable FAST Cache, so what is this top check mark for ?

The error about FAST Cache definitely seems to be a bug. If you dont have FAST Cache on your system, it should not give you a warning about that feature.
The idea behind providing the "Enable Caching" checkbox was to provide a single checkbox to either enable all caches (read, write and FAST Cache, if applicable) with a single click, or disable all kinds of cache with a single click. In your case, since both read and write cache is enabled, the "Enable Caching" checkbox should automatically get selected. I tried it on my CX4-480 system in the lab, and this feature seems to be working as designed. Are you running the latest patch of R30 on your system?
You would not see this when you login directly to your CX3 system, because Navisphere did not have this "feature" in the code.

When I check an old CX3 system from withing Unisphere the top check mark is off as well. When I log on to the CX3 in Navisphere directly, the upper check mark isn't even there. Am I worrying about something that's not worth the time or is this really something I've set wrong here ? SPCollect / CAP2 indicates my settings are good, but I'm in doubt.

I'm running the 30.509 version.
I tested the check box and it’s indeed as you described.
On any LUN, either with disabled or enabled caches (R / W) when I check mark it, all cache gets enabled. After this when I look at the properties again, the check mark is unset again, so I’d have to assume it’s functioning as a sort of “ON switch”, which can only be used to turn cache on.
Thanks for the heads up.
