Clarion Alert Event Number 720e

Alert:

Time Stamp 07/25/10 13:14:34 (GMT) Event Number 720e Severity Warning Host CX4_960_SPA Storage Array XXXXXXXXXX SP A Device N/A Description Initiator (xx:xx:xx:aa:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:aa:xx:xx:xx:xx:) on Server (abc) registered with the storage system is now inactive. It does not have a working physical connection. See Navisphere Manager for details.

Above alert receiving when Server reboots.

Analyzed SP collects, SWITCH Logs and confirmed that no issues with Storage and Switch from EMC support.

This host has two HBA. Why getting problem for one initiator? We restarted this server so many times –  we never   receive  the alert  before  July 25th . No changes done in SAN. Confused why this alert receiving now- why not earlier.

Please any one can help me to solve this issue.

Hi,

You can refer Primus emc220396 for Event number 720e.

This might help...

This many be happening due to a delay in fabric login by the problem Host HBA. After the server reboot did you confirm if the probem HBA comes online in Navisphere Manager Connectivity Status immediately, or if there is a delay in the login status post reboot.

One basic recommendation would be to upgrade the HBA driver\Firmware.

Thanks

Providing proof that the HBA logged off when the host reboots and is not logged on the array will be difficult. In cases such as these, we recommend that you ensure that all the HBA drivers are up-to-date, that the switch firmware is up-to-date and that the array code is the latest.

You could have a slow HBA, wiring issues, SFP (GBIC) issues on the switch or HBA.

Is this the only HBA that is doing this when a host is rebooted? Do you see the message in the logs on both SPA and SPB? Is there two paths from the HBA to the array using two switches?

Dears,

Each HBA have two paths. And EMC Support- host and switch team analyze the logs, and they confirmed no issues with HBA, drivers and firmware.

Yes only problem with one HBA.

If slow HBA, wiring issues, SFP (GBIC) issues on the switch or HBA why this happen during server reboot?

Alert Messages generating for SPA.

Best regards,

Muneer.

If the Hosts comes up and all paths are good like you stated EMC support said the array was fine .... This is just a timing issue and nothing to worry about.

If time  cause the problem  , why  this issue only  with one HBA(we have two HBA,4 path)?

Look in the event log and see if it gives more information ... But if it just happens during a reboot then it is a timing issue and if the host comes back up and we do not see any issues then there is not a problem . You could turn off the alerts but I would leave them on.

Log in to the array > Click Monitors tab > Select the array monitored > right-click the template used, stop using  > Select Properties > Advanced > Warning >  alert > Uncheck

  • 0x720E server initiator {0} no longer has an active connection to the storage system.

  • 0x721B HBA {0} on Host {1} may not be connected to a storage group properly.

Click OK to save the change. Then right-click the template used and start using.

If you have a case open with EMC, what is the case number?

Have they reviewed the host grab?

Have you considered that the HBA might be bad? Can you replace the HBA?
