Creating initial RAID on AX4-5i

I have never configured a SAN before so I'm a bit apprehensive about making a mistake that is difficult to recover from as I am being pushed to get this running very quickly. I'm going to be configuring as a RAID5 but when it asks which disks I want to include I'm not sure.

The setup guide states that drives 0-3 have reserved space for system software. Does that mean that I can't use them as a part of a larger RAID array being that all the drives need to be the same size?

Also, do I include the hot spare in this array so it knows that it is supposed to take over in case of a drive failure?

Ah, ok, you're talking about a storage ! I was thinking what configuring a SAN had anything to do with configuring a storage array ;) (SAN = HBA, cables + switches)

Disks 0_0_0 to 0_0_3 are in use by the OS of the AX, but there's some space left for you to use. I'd configure the remaining space (the only free space on those 4 disks you'll be able to see) as 1 RAID5 Raid Group and use it for a file server or something. At least not some heavy duty host, since that could impact the overall performance of the Clariion. If you have to create a larger Raid Group than 4 disks and you cannot create it on other disks, remember that the available space on the first 4 disks are leading in that Raid Group and if you'd add a 5th disk, only that much of the space of that 5th disk will be used, so you'll waste some GB's on that 5th disk.
That's why normally either you don't even use the first 4 disks (5 in a CX series Clariion) or create a RAID5 RG on them for light servers.
