CX4-120 initial raid group creation

Hi,

We just upgraded CX-300 to CX4-120 and I'm looking for a best practice document before creating the raid groups on my new system.

I've 15 X 450 GB FC disk in a rack and I'm looking for the best practice guide. Should I create a raid 6 with 14 disk and leave one for spare ?
Should I create a raid 5 with 14 disk and leave one for spare ?
Should I create many raid 6 and 5 with the 14 disk and leave one or two disk for spares ?

I'm a little bit confused because in the actual system, we created a raid 5 group by lun....but we "loose" a disk for parity by raid 5 group....at the end, it make a lot of disk space loose in parity....

Thanks,

Steves,

take a look at this thread:

https://forums.emc.com/forums/thread.jspa?tstart=0&threadID=98720

look for kelleg list of recommended readings. I know it's a lot of reading but you will find it very very useful as you administer your array. Welcome to EMC forums ;)

another very good resource on PowerLink is "White Papers". These are really good guides that describe how to deploy certain platforms/applications on EMC gear.

Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Hardware/Platforms Documentation > CLARiiON CX4 Series Systems > CLARiiON CX4-120 > White Papers

and

Home > Support > Knowledgebase Search > Documentation and White Papers Search

if you search white papers for string "Clariion ESX", you will find plethora of documents that describe how to best deploy ESX on Clariions.

Thanks again !
