Hobbyist: purchased 2 x KTN-STL4 JBODs some questions please

Hi everyone, I'm an enthusiast so please forgive the silly questions.

I recently bought two EMC KTN-STL4 JBODs and I'm impressed about their speed. I'd like to control the JBODs more actively also because the fan noise and power consumption is an absolute killer and there is absolutely no environmental need to be running all PSU fans at full blast. I currently only have 5 disks in the 15 disk shelf...

Could somebody please help me what I need to do? I wouldn't mind adding a control unit etc if that is required. So far, I am connecting the JBOD to my LSI HBA with SPFF and all is working super well..

Thanks!

Hello emcjunjie,

The JBODS that you have are normally attached to a Clariion CX3 or CX4 system.  Typically, you would connect the JBODS to Storage Processor Enclosure (SPS).  Since these systems are no longer supported, you won’t be able to get any upgrades or firmware patches.

HI Sam,

thank you for the quick reply. Fully understand that and as I do not really need to patch or upgrade anything, as these gems recognize my 16TB drives without an issue... Only thing I wanted to do is see if I can lower the fan speeds, as the device stays on full blast. Do you recon I can do that through the SAS HBA connection or do I need the CX4 to access the interface?

Again, all I'm looking to do is access the JBODS web ui to see if I can work out the fan speed issue.

Thanks again for your kind support!

Hello emcjunjie,

You control the JBODS using Unisphere.  However, since you don’t have a SP you can’t use unisphere to control your JBODS.  There is no UI that can be accessed on the JBOD as all is controlled through the Storage processer enclosure.

Thanks Sam, would one of these work out for my purpose? I am confused about the connector requirements so appreciate your help!

All I am looking for is:

LAN---[1G ethernet]---controller---[sas]---jobd---[sas]---jobd

Thanks for your support, it's really hard to dig up information on these babies:-)

I see that you were able to get this working with 16TB drives, what controller did you use with it? Also were the drives ENC drives, or normal consumer SATA drives? I just picked up five of these, and people are saying you have to use ENC drives, that cost a lot more.

Did you ever get the fans figured out? I was thinking of just opening the unit up, and disconnecting some of the fans.

Using it for CHIA crypto storage.

Im a fellow chia miner and i use a lot of EMC STL KTN. Did you ever figure the fan noise on how to reduce it?
