Host rebuild question.

I have a W2K3 server that needs its OS reinstalled. The host is currently in a storage group with one LUN attached to it. I want to ensure the data on the LUN is present after I rebuild the host and reconnect it to the CX3-40f. Are the any special steps I need to perform inorder to ensure that I can reattach to the LUN and still use the data after the rebuild? Backups will be taken regardless....

is host name/ip address staying the same ? Are you booting from SAN ? Since you are reinstalling might as well take this opportunity and install the latest powerpath, latest hba drivers/firmware.

Hi Dnbfsu,

If this is the only SAN volume presented to the host and neither IP address or HBA(wwn) parameter is changed i will take care of the following to avoid any distruption in storage and SAN

1. Disable the switch port where the host is connected to
2. cos of above host will be unmanaged in Navishpere (thats ok)
3. remove the FC cable from HBA(s)
4. Start the rebuilding process( upgrading HBA drviers , PP ext)
5. Once above is done, I will reconnect the FC cable to HBA, enable the switch port
6. Hopefully :-) , the lun will be seen by the windows machine
7. Powepath will take care of paths but make sure you select the appropriate primary path
8. Now I beleive only mounting ( assigning ) the driver letter is required after which the volume is ready to use.

Rgds,
Vivek
