Is there a CX3 and CX4 disk performance tool?

we need to check the lun performance and could really use a tool to do this.

does one exist?

thanks

EMC recommends regularly using Navisphere® Analyzer to monitor and analyze storage system performance. Regular monitoring with Analyzer provides the baseline performance metrics for historical comparison. This information can give early warning to unplanned changes in performance and be used as a basis for storage system tuning.

Analyzer is a licensed product.

if you buy the enterprise edition of navisphere you get analyzer, otherwise as noted it is available seperately. Nice thing about analyzer is that the enabler is rebootless now.

If you want to look up some information on Navisphere Analyzer. Use Navi help. There is a section called analyzing system performance with Navisphere Analyzer (or something along those lines). This gives information on what it does and what you can look at.

This is the administrators guide so this has all of the information that would be in it.

Have you already looked at host performance data for the LUN using sar/iostat/perfmon etc tools? If you do not have the Navisphere Analyzer or WLA, you can make some determination looking a the host data response times. If you do not see high service times, then array level analysis may not be needed. Just some thoughts.
If you have nar or wla data and need help, let me know.

The CX3 and CX4 both come with a service version on Navisphere Analyzer installed on the array (unlicensed).

This version allows a use to collect performance data if they have a performance issue - the files created by this basic version (NAZ) are encrypted and can only be read by EMC support.

You can send support the files if you are experiencing and performance issue. If there is a hardware issue, then support will make recommendations for resolving, if it's a configuration issue, then they will recommend that you contact the local EMC CSPEED (Clariion performance expert) person for additional help.

cool, ok, so I can start analyser for 7 days on the 2 clarions, and they archive the data to the sp. then I can retrieve them as naz files.

I'd need to send these to EMC to process them on the unlicenced one?

does the fully licenced product sit on my pc and read them in then? and what sort of cost would it be to buy it? (ballpark would do, is it 00's, 000's ?)

we'd ideally like a performance history of the clarions, not just 7 days - is that possible?

thanks for your help :)

For the archives that are .naz files, only support can open these files. They are there to help support determine if a problem is on the array or somewhere else without requiring the licensed version of Analyzer.

If you need to continually monitor an array for performance, you would need to purchase the license for Analyzer - you need to contact your local EMC office for pricing.

Roger,

To go an answer the questions that weren't answered...

No, the licensed product does not sit on your local PC. The part you are buying is an enabler to install directly onto the array. Then you can download the NAR files afterward (non-encrypted) and open them within Navisphere (on array or off array).

Your "historical data" will be from the point you start getting NAR files and pulling them down. Usually people set up analyzer so the files cover 26 hours (over one day) and they pull them down to get an overall view of performance for that day.

JPS00,

What is your meaning of "..regularly using Navisphere® Analyzer to monitor and analyze storage system performance?" what settings do you use and how often should this be done? intervals, etc?

I keep hearing there is a performance hit when running NaviAna, but how much of a hit?

If I'm correct the impact was something like 3%, but that was on gen2 hardware.
