Issue with snapshot activation using admsnap.
Hi all,
We are trying to activate several snapshots on the secondary server for backup tasks. We are able to activate all nut one specific snapshot. This is the scenario:
1) The snapshot is created.
2) The session is started.
3) We try to activate the snapshot by issuing this command:
admsnap.exe activate -s Sessionname -d driveletter:
4) We get the following output:
Scanning for new devices.
User specified drive letter driveletter:
No devices were found that could activate this session.
Notes:
The source lun is not included in the secondary server storage group.
We have found a few solutions on powerlink and followed their instructions but no luck so far, ie: emc183475.
Thanks for your time.

Are those dynamic disks? What is the Host OS?
Did you try steps in How to activate a snap session on a Windows 2000 host running dynamic disks ?

Hello Ankit, we are not using dynamic disks. The host OS is Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2. Yes, we have followed the instructions from that document too. We are actually trying to automate the whole process. Thanks for your answer.

Thank you for the update Chad, I appericiate your time.
If we have tried everything. Might I suggest to open a Service Request with EMC Technical Support so that we can check what exactly is going on under the hood?!
If you decide to open a Service Request and it works out. I would request you to share the fix with us!
Merry Christmas!

Chad,
Do you have any screenshots you can share of the storage group configuration, powermt and diskpart output from the host, etc? If many snapshots are working already and only one is not, then there is likely some small difference with that one snapshot preventing it from operating properly...
What happens if you perform the tasks manually through Unisphere and Windows Disk Management? Does it work that way? If you can't mount the snapshot that way then the issue is not script related.
Make sure the associated snapshot is in the storage group for the secondary server.
If you haven't already, give the Windows host a reboot to ensure it sees all of the snapshot devices.

Happy New Year Rich!,
When the operations (Create snap, add snap to storage group, start session and activate snap) are performed manually the snapshots are activated flawlessly. The storage group of the secondary server contains only the required snapshots.
I will add more screenshots in a few minutes.
Best regards.
