Memory cache based on Compact Flash Memory in the CX4-120
Hi everyone!
I need verify that the EMC Clariion storage system (specifically the CX4-120) has a system cache memory protection based on compact flash memory with unlimited time for recovery of cached data or battery backup to protect data for at least 72 hours system or automatic withdrawal of the write cache to disk.
If by chance the CX4-120 has this feature, or at least similar, is there any proof or documentation that specifies this?
If by chance the CX4-120 does not have this feature, it can be implemented?
Thanks for help!

I dont know if the memory has this feature but the array has a SPS (Standby Power Supply) which in the event of a power outage, it keeps power to the CX4 SPE and the First DAE (DAE-OS) and it uses that power to copy any data that is on the physical memory onto the vault drives. once it does that, it shuts down completely. That way, anything that was in cache has been written to the vault drives of both Storage Processors and if i remember right, when the array comes back up (no matter how long it has been offline) it then writes that data to the actuall LUN.
Only thing to think about is that the CX4-120 model can sometimes come with only 1 SPS instead of 2. that SPS will then only keep SPA online during the scenario described above.

Its unclear if you are referring to a CX4-120 provisioned with Flash drives for the Vault or not. This is an available feature starting with FLARE Revision 29.0. You can contact your local EMC Sales office for information on specific features and provisioning.
Alternately, the EMC CLARiiON Storage System Fundamentals for Performance and Availability white paper in its 'Standby power' section contains a complete description of the CLARiiON CX4-series power failure modes and availability provided. The CX4-120's power failure behavior is as described in that section. This document is available for download on Powerlink.
In addition, EMC CLARiiON Best Practices for Performance and Availablity, FLARE Revision 29.0 in its 'Vault drives' section describes the provisioning options for the CLARiiON Vault, including useage of semiconductor-based Flash drives. This document is likewise available on Powerlink.
