Please see KnowloedgeBase (or Support Solution) on PowerLink - emc254967 - in this article there is a section for Vmware - some of these talk about the failover mode settings for EMC and VMware. Also article emc99467.
In general, if the failover mode on the array is set to 1, then the failover policy on the LUNs must be MRU. If the failover mode is set to 4 (ALUA), then the failover policy on the LUNs should be set to either FIXED or Round Robin. ESX 3.x only supports failover mode 1 and does not support failover mode 4. ESX 4.x supports either 1 or 4.
