Unisphere Client problems and Java
I have been plagued with trying to run the Unishpere VNX Client ever since Java 7 has come out. We are now up to the latest Java 7.45
and I have tried the last three versions of the Windows Unisphere Client. I just installed the 1.3.0 version of the client and guess what, it still doesnt work. I do not have the time & patience to call it in & deal with a (lets try this or that from 1st level support) so I figure i will at least drop the problem out here so that maybe when it becasue a top hit on the web, EMC will take note and fix it.
This happens no matter the browser. It launches, i say (accept or Run or Allow ) to the Java Popup and it errors. When I click on the details of the error I get the below.
ava Plug-in 10.45.2.18
Using JRE version 1.7.0_45-b18 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\Users\JoeM
----------------------------------------------------
c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to
----------------------------------------------------
ANY HELP would be appreciated. And "no" i dont want to just go to the IP of the control station because that never got updated in all the FLARE updates. The client has newer better controls.
I am using a CX4 - NS480 EMC system. Client is Windows 7 64bit. SP1

Your best bet is complain through other channels like sales, or submit a Request for Enhancement (RFE). The folks on the forums are support people, not engineering. Your local sales team has a better shot of sending the complaints up the food chain to engineering and development staff, than posts here on the forums. As others have said, this problem has existed for years with many supposed Tech giants. I had a really good conversation at EMC World last year with some engineers about ways to get the problem noticed. Pity that plan hasn't really panned out this year....

Just noticed that you're using a NS480 - that's an integrated Celerra system with a captive CX4-480 array on the backend. To access the SP Management ports you must have proxy-arp configured on the Control Station in order to access the SP ports. Run the following command on the Control Station to see what it's configured for, then make sure you put one of the IP addresses in Client.
[nasadmin@Twix ~]$ /nas/sbin/clariion_mgmt -info
Public IP address for SPA: 10.10.10.10
Public IP address for SPB: 10.10.10.11
Start on boot : yes
Current implementation : Proxy-ARP
Status : Started
The last item is which version of software on the CX4-480 supports the Unisphere interface. Unisphere was introduced in Flare release 30 for the CX4 and is the minimum flare release that would support Unisphere. Make sure that you Celerra is at the most current release 6.0.70.4/5.30.000.525.
I tested the 1.3 Client on one of the lab NS480's running the above versions and using Java 1.6.30 and did not experience and issues. I was using IE 7.1 on a Windows 7 workstation. I also tried this on a Windows 7 with IE 8 and Java 1.6.30 and a Windows XP with IE 8 and Java 1.6.30 without issues.
As I said before, of your NS480 is at the currently supported Dart/Flare version and your PC is running the supported configuration that are listed in the Unisphere Client Release notes and you're experiencing issues, then if you open a service request we will get engineering to fix that issue.

We too are facing more and more challenges with Java compatibility.
Oracle stopped releasing public security updates to Java 1.6 in April of 2013.
It is riddled with security vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited.
Its slightly amazing to me that EMC's official support line would still be "go back to 1.6"
I can appreciate the time and effort needed to test and certify a new release of Unisphere, but please EMC, at least give us an update on the current development status. When well we have a version of Unisphere that is certified with Java 1.7 including the manifest signing changes that will be introduced in January? Are you even working on one?

I have an open service request where I ask EMC:
I have also found some nice blog and news articles that summ up very well what the current situation is in Java land:

To be honest I do face the same issues with Unisphere client and the plague called Java.
OS: win7 x64
Browser: IE11
Client: UnisphereClient-Win-32-x86-en_US-1.3.1.1.0033-1
Java: 1.7.0_45
It's about time to release a version qualified for 1.7 - it's almost 2014!!!
frustrated regards, Masl

As stated earlier, we do support Java 7:
Browsers
• Internet Explorer 7.0-10.0 (7.1 is recommended)
• Firefox 4.0-12.0
Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
• JRE 1.6 update 18 to JRE 1.7 update 25
• JRE 1.7 update 17 is recommended

@ glen:
well, EMC does support a version 7 of Java and IE - but not the most recent/secure one - that's the point.
Up-to-date version would mean: Java 1.7.45 and IE 11.
One is being told to update the software - but if you do so you're running versions, not supported by EMC.
It looks like I have to decide whether to run a secure environment or to be able to use EMC Unisphere.
best regards,
Masl

I opened a case about this with EMC ( 59423074 ) and after much back and forth and finally getting them to understand my concern, the best answer I seem to be able to get is that a new version of Unisphere is under development and will be released 'ASAP'.
Which version of java 1.7 that will support: Unknown.
Will it take the 7u51 manifest requirements into account? Unknown.
Its frustrating that EMC seems to be unable or unwilling to communicate concisely over Unisphere development and specifically our security concerns regarding Java. The responses I got from EMC support appeared to be confused and somewhat ignorant about the current situation with Java. As for Unisphere development, the average smartphone app developer seems to be able to do a better job keeping their customers in the loop regarding updates and code development.

You can search the keywords "Unisphere Client" in https://support.emc.com/search directly then choose the Downloads option and will find it, attached the Unisphere Client search result here.

I just downloaded it, I will perform the "uninstall--reboot-reinstall" process ( a cool 30 minute process), and will give it a shot. I downloaded and installed the latest Java 7.51 which a half dozen apps I use work fine with it. Lets see if this build works. I will post results...

Here are the results. I am running a Windows 7 -64bit workstation and IE 11, Firefox 24, and Opera 12.
Interestingly enough, it launched and loaded however, I AM ONLY GETTING THE NAS, where did the block (SAN) go?
The GUI comes up and the NAS is there but where is the SAN ? It is missing!
Look, all I hear from the forums and EMC support is old versions of JAVA, Old browsers, etc.. are these people working on "this" planet?
Tell ya what, money talks. We are looking at a serious investment to replace our current system but if i have to deal with antiquated tools and poor support, NetApp works just fine. Yes, I am pissed. I don't have time to play with the tools much less write these posts.
Since you are providing a client anyway, why not just dump JAVA altogether...

Now that I am calm......and after much troubleshooting, I got it to work, "half-baked", but better than resorting to the control station GUI interface that is hard set at version 1.0
It is still NOT working correctly as one of the workarounds is to point it at one of the SP's instead of the control station. (Kind of defeats the purpose of the control station though). That and also under the hood of JAVA and cleaning out a few old references... I am able to utilize the GUI.
The reason the GUI loaded on the client is preferred is: faster, especially when utilizing a quota'd CIFS and waiting for the system to convert the UID numbers to AD accounts. better performance of context menus and quick controls. It also has a few other goodies like the interface tab options and pool listings.
I am still annoyed that I had to spend lots of my own time to fix tools that the vendor should be providing to work with their own equipment....and I will be addressing that at our next pre-sale meeting.

Hi All,
I'm having the same problem with the "Unisphere VNX Client", and couldn't find a solution
for this problem!!
I've uninstalled Java and installed old version 1.6 (32bit version), but that didn't solve the problem!!!

Please open a service request with EMC. If you have tried all the suggestions listed in this post and you're still experiencing issues, then you need to have a service request open so that support can work with engineering to see what the issue is.
