Remove storage and expand
Hi,
I ran into an issue the other day.
The task was a simple one or I thought.
DD2200
DDOS 5.5.0.9
7 disks
Install the remaining 5 disks and increase the file system but not from 6TB to 12TB.
Destroy the filesystem and create a filesystem of 16TB seeing that all 12 disks will now form part of one raid group.
Is this possible?
The steps I followed:
1. Upgraded the memory from 2 x 4GB to 4 x 4GB
2. Installed the disks
3. Realized that I didn't add the license I then did it
At this stage for some reason all the new disks got added as spares to the current config.
When I ran " disk show state" I had the 7 disks and from disk 8 to 12 was all spares.
Two questions:
1. Why would this be the case?
Could this have something to do with not first adding the license before installing the disks?
Does a Expansion license only allow you to create a 7 + 5 config of could this also be used to create a 12 disk raid group?
2. How do I deconfigure all the disks if I want to create an entire new raid group containing all 12 disks without running a fresh install from USB?
Much appreciated.

Hello,
What you describe is exactly as designed.
You added the memory, license and disks and it sounds like you have also performed the command;
storage add disk 1.8 (1.9, 1.10 etc...)
When you first installed them, they would have shown "U" (Unknown disks).
When you added them - they will indeed become "S" (spare disks).
The remaining command to bring these new disks in would be; filesys expand.
After you run that you will be left with all disks in use (a . (dot)) and ONE spare disk (S).
Your filesystem will be expanded to use the 5 new disks.
After expansion, you will have one RAID group of six disks, one RAID group of 5 disks and a spare that can be used by either of your 2x RAID groups.
The disks in a DD2200 are 2TB disks.
So, your concern is that doing it this way loses you some useable storage space;
This is indeed correct, but you cannot mitigate it without a factory USB install - this means backup data will need to be destroyed to achieve this. It will create one RAID group of 11 disks and one disk as a Spare.
The DDOS and filesystem are shared on those existing 6 disks and so you cannot do this with backup data intact, that's why the ability to expand the storage live and online exists in the way you see here but does result in lost useable space due to the requirement of two RAID groups to achieve it seamlessly.
