Issues with Adding Avamar to DPA
Hi, DPA Newbie here. Just finished installing DPA 6.2 SP2, and am starting off by trying to communicate with one of our Avamar grids. Running into a problem... hoping somebody can set me straight. Thanks!
I run the Discovery wizard and select EMC Avamar
On the next screen, I provide the Hostname of the Avamar grid.
On the next screen, I am only able to select the box for "Host System Monitoring". The box for "Replication Monitoring" is greyed out. WHY IS THIS?
Moving on, on the next screen (Step 4 - Data Collection Agent), the option for "Remote Collection Agent" is greyed out. I can confirm that I have the DPA Agent running on the DPA server itself, but I'm not able to select it on this screen.
Any ideas what is thwarting me?
I have a 51TB "Avamar Backend Capacity License" installed, as well as a DPA Base license and a couple other things...
Thanks!

Hi,
Avamar Engineering does not like a DPA Agent installed on the Avamar Utility node, so we collect the data by proxy using a.n.other agent. You could use the DPA agent on the App server or the DS server but best practice is to use another Agent elsewhere but if your environment is small and the Agent isn't already collecting a lot of other data, then you could use it.
Host System monitoring is only available if there is a DPA Agent on the unix host itself - so as you're not allowed to install a DPA Agent on the Avamar Server , you should NOT select this option. Replication Monitoring is for PRIMARY STORAGE replication monitoring, which Avamar is not, so you should not select this option either. In summary, do not select either of these options in the Discovery Wizard screen. Once neither of them are selected, then you will be able to select a proxy/remote Agent on the next screen (if you selected Host System Monitoring, then it implies you have a local agent, so thus the next screen doesn't allow you to select a proxy).
Next thing, Avamar credentials, as from Avamar 7 onwards, upon install/config/setup of Avamar, you have to set the passwords for the various users on the Avamar system. DPA historically uses the "viewuser" user in Avamar to collect the data - this used to be pre-created and password pre-set - but since Avamar 7, you have to actually set the password for the "viewuser" login - and thus when using the DPA Discovery Wizard, you need to create a new credential to use , with the password you chose at Avamar install/config time.
This is all detailed in the DPA Install and Administration Guide, and we also have two EMC Education courses on DPA available to you.
