Two announcements from EMC regarding Data Domain
Two new announcements from EMC regarding Data Domain:
- New Record Breaking EMC Data Domain Backup Systems 7 Times Faster Than Competition
- EMC Attacks Tape’s Last Major Hideout With First Storage System For Backup and Archive
Overviews of these announcements are below.
New Record Breaking EMC Data Domain Backup Systems 7 Times Faster Than Competition
EMC® Corporation announced the most significant array of disk-based backup advancements in the history of the company. Taken in sum, these new products, system enhancements, integration initiatives and performance gains substantially alter the existing landscape for backup and recovery. The new EMC Data Domain® Global Deduplication Array (GDA) incorporates two of the new EMC Data Domain DD890 controllers, making the GDA the world’s fastest deduplication storage system. EMC also announced that the GDA now supports the EMC Data Domain Virtual Tape Library software option, which further expands the number of supported backup applications including IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). New high-end Data Domain DD890 and DD860 single controller systems also eclipse the throughput of competing solutions by up to a factor of 8. In addition, Data Domain systems now natively support and can protect IBM Power systems using the IBM i operating environment as yet another shared work load across the majority of the product line. Finally, EMC also announced the EMC Data Domain Archiver, the industry’s first long term retention system for backup and archive (see separate press release).

New Product Highlights and Performance Leadership
- DD Archiver incorporates the controller from the new EMC Data Domain DD860 and other common Data Domain design elements to optimize performance, manageability, and reliability across a single namespace.
- With up to 9.8 TB per hour of throughput, DD Archiver delivers the speed required to first and foremost meet backup windows.
- A tiered-storage design enables policy-driven movement of aging data from an active tier to a highly scalable archive tier.
- Offers up to 768TB of raw capacity that can be allocated between tiers to balance user requirements of performance and retention.
- Incorporates unique capabilities such as logical partitioning of older data for fault isolation, an upgrade and migration architecture, a more granulardisaster recovery configuration, and the familiar Data Domain Data Invulnerability Architecture—all of which are required elements in a system that is designed for the long term retention of backup and archive data.
- DD Archiver supports today’s most common data archiving method, which is long term retention of backups, as well as the increasing adoption of archiving workloads. Among many supported data movers and workloads, DD Archiver can also be leveraged with popular archiving solutions such as EMC SourceOne and EMC File Management Appliance.
