Dell OME Backup failure

Hi, I'm running Dell OME 4.3.2 and am trying to do a Backup but its failing.

This is what I'm doing On the Backup/Restore page:

- I've configured the backup location (and tested ok)

- added a passphrase

- Storage Available ticked

- Running tasks set to terminate (though I've tried both options)

- Plugins dependencies ticked

- Schedule set to Run Now

I then select 'Run Backup' and get a popup error (red box) stating:

   - Error while running backup task:

      -- CGEN972 - Pre-check failed beacuse of the DCS connection failure. {note, that's the actual spelling of 'because' in the message}

   - Recommended Action:

-- Please wait for few mins and retry the operation.

I've tried the following but still get the error:

- waited over an hour

- removed plugins

- tried several combinations of options

- used the scheduler

- restarted OME and tried the above

I've searched the web but can't find any specific references to that error.

FYI, my goal is to migrate to Dell OME 4.4.0/1 on a new restored appliance. Reason being is that I can't get the current 4.3.2 version to upgrade to 4.4.1, the process starts and sits there saying something like upgrade in progress. I've tried numerous times including doing a restart of OME right before upgrade.

So I thought I'd do a Backup and migrate to a new instance but the backup doesn't work either - awesome.

Any help would be welcome.

PaulMarch,

From the look of it the command that Martin Shared was intended for OMSA not OME. I am including a video here though that shows how to push CLI commands through OME.

Let me know if this helps.

Hello, depending on how complex the OME deployment is,it could be easier to redeploy/rediscover all servers. Or you can always need to raise a proper case with support if any of the service tags you manage is still in warranty.

You can send us by DM https://www.dell.com/community/en/direct-messaging

Thanks, thats the conclusion I came to earlier today. I've spun up a new appliance and reconfigured it.
The only issue I have now is that under 'Update Management' when I try to create a new repository I just get a box saying 'Please Wait' and nothing happens. Any ideas?

Hi,

If the GUI backup continues to fail, consider:

  • Manual Backup:

    • Use the OME CLI to perform a backup:
      bash

      /opt/dell/omsa/bin/omconfig system backup action=create file=<backup_file_path> passphrase=<your_passphrase>
    • This bypasses the GUI and may provide more detailed error output.
  • Database Backup:

    • OME uses PostgreSQL. You can manually back up the database:
      bash

      pg_dump -U postgres -d idrac -f /path/to/backup.sql

@Dell-Martin S   The new OME appliance is working from a backups perspective.
Any idea why the  'Update Management' plugin doesn't show the form when I try to create a new repository? Is this a known bug?
I remember this also happening with previous versions of OME.

Cheers

Dear customer I suspect you have issues with the network/firewall rules.

I'll test it again next week and if it works you would have to work with the local network team to see why connection gets blocked

You can collect OME logs and share with us.

Respectfully,

@DELL-Young E   Hi, I think you've missed the point that this is on a non-internet facing system. We manually move the updates to a NFS share.

Dear customer,
I think it is possible UPM is probing the backend servers. Why don't we just map the share to OME directly.

I think it is designed to work online, not offline.

@DELL-Young E I have mapped it directly at the moment but I used to use the plugin and it has a few additional features that are useful.
Like I said, it used to work. If you set up the proxy loopback it work but does come up an error.
Why have the plugin if it can't simply work with the rest of the system?

Hi, you're totally right — the plugin does have some handy features, and it should ideally work smoothly with the rest of the system. If it's throwing errors when using the proxy loopback, that's definitely not how it's supposed to behave.

Mapping the backup directly is a solid workaround for now, but I get that it's not the same as having the full plugin functionality. Appreciate you bringing this up  feedback like yours is super valuable for improving things.
