Hyper-V VM hanging during boot

Greetings Community!

I need assistance with a Server 2019 VM boot problem

Symptom:  VM hangs during boot

Version: 3.6.1

Hardware: Dell R730xd in a 4-system Server 2019 cluster

Factors:

  1. VHD sits on a clustered storage pool (along with several other VMs that do not appear to be affected)
  2. When I move the VHD to a local storage disk (ie. the Desktop), the VM boots fine.
  3. Receive the following message during boot: [FAILED] Failed to start Create Volatile Files and Directories.  See 'systemctl status systemdtmpfiles-setup.service' for details.
  4. Unable to "log in" when pressing "c" or choosing to log in to the Advanced menu at the boot menu.  I can't find these credentials anywhere online.  I have tried the following combinations admin/admin, admin/dell, root/admin, root/dell, root/calvin, admin/ , root/ , and root or admin with the password I used to set up OME when I had it working on the local storage.
  5. I've found various things to try to remediate the Volatile files and directories issue, but I can't log in to try any of them. At this point, I'm not even sure that it's related.

I really want the VHD to sit in the clustered storage pool so that Cluster Aware Updating will work without taking down OME for a host reboot.

I appreciate any assistance!

Thanks,

Nathan Wells

Hi Nathan,

I may need some time to check with my co-worker if we're able to simulate your issue. It seems that the OME VM is restricted to access the storage pool, since when you move the VHD out to local storage, it will be fine. What file system are you using on the storage pool? Have you tried other versions of OME, say 3.6.0? or lower?

Can you try to install SAE the same way you install OME: https://dell.to/3rmTTIt. And check if the issue is the same when VM is booting up.

Hi Joey,

I have not tried downgrading the version, but just today I upgraded to 3.7.0.82.  It's still doing the same thing after the upgrade though. The problem still exists.  The file system I'm using for the clustered storage is CSVFS.

Hi Nathan,

I've not good with Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V and clustering. So I had a couple of words with a co-worker who happen to have a test server with Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V. He did tested out installing OME on Windows Server 2019 cluster pool (CSV) and mentioning it's booting up with no errors. It may seem that he mentioned saying it could be the server environment that OME couldn't run on your side. Perhaps, a deep dive with the OME support via phone warranty support.

Are you using ReFS file system?
