I presume you are using OME 1.1/1.1.1. Please make sure to take a BACKUP of the database before you try this operation.

Steps:

Backup the database from SQL 2005 and restore it in SQL 2008/2012.

Install OME 1.2 (which may install additional pre-requisites) and select "custom installation". Select SQL 2008/2012 where "OMEssentials" database instance resides.

OME 1.2 installer will detect "OMEssentials" database (make sure DB name is OMEssentials) and run the upgrade scripts.

Once the installation is completed, re-run discovery and inventory on all the discovery ranges.

Thanks,

Yes, we are using OME 1.1.1 at the moment.

I will give these steps a shot. I must admit I didn't notice a custom option for the install.

Thank you.

Raj, there is no custom installation option. Shows the pre-requisites and just has an install essentials button and rescan dependencies.

Launches the install if I click the button. I hit next, then accept the EULA and then receive:

Dell OME cannot be installed or upgraded on SQL Server versions prior to SQL 2008. Refer to the FAQ for information on possible migration and additonal details.

I cannot find this FAQ either.

Thanks

Hi,

As Raj has mentioned that you need to take the back up of the db in SQL 2005 and restore it in 2008. After restoring you need to point the existing OME server to this 2008 db. This is called db retargetting. Detailed steps on db retargetting can be found at http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/f/4494/t/19440364.aspx

Couple of questions here:

  • the back-up has been restored to SQL 2008 express or SQL 2008 enterprise?
  • if it is SQL express, what is the name of the instance to which the database has been restored? Is it SQLEXPRESSOME?

Since there ate three possibilities, i will explain them:

  1. If you have restored the db to SQL2008 enterprise, OME 1.2 installer will automatically detect the OME db and upgrade to OME 1.2 on the same db.
  2. If you have upgraded to SQL EXPRESS 2008 and the instance name is SQLEXPRESSOME, then also OME 1.2 installer will detect the OME db and it will be upgraded to OME 1.2.
  3. If it is upgraded to SQL EXPRESS 2008 and the instance name is anything other name SQLEXPRESSOME, then OME 1.2 installer will detect the existing db and install SQL EXPRESS 2012, and then migrate the db to SQL EXPRESS 2012. This is an automated process and OME will be upgraded to version 1.2.
Hope this helps. Please let us know for more information.

Hi and thank you. I also managed to find that document you linked to, last night.

it will be going from 2005 Enterprise to 2008/2012 enterprise. We have both and unsure which we will actually use.

I wanted to get all of my ducks in a row before I started moving things all ove the place.

I hope to do all of this, sometime this week.

I will update the thread when done to let you both knwo if it worked.

Thanks,

Sean

Thank you both. I moved the database quick and easily without any issues.

I am now able to run the update.
