Which browser best to use?

I have been using OME for a few months now.  Still getting the feel of it.  Something new going on now.  If I use IE 8 to open the program from my desktop, I cannot open the Remote Desktop Connection on any server.  Simply nothing happens, no error, no visible attempt by the program to open that RDP interface.

If I use Firefox (v 14.0.1) I get an error when I try to use the RDP option that says:

RDP launch error undefined.

Verify installation of ActiveX control

I certainly have ActiveX installed and enabled can open RDP from my dekstop any time.

Why is it that I cannot open RDP from OME?

Thanks,

KBeau

Hi KBeau,

I use Firefox and IE and they both seem to do equally fine.  Chrome will likely work ok but is _not_ supported officially.

You have ActiveX and RDP enabled on your OME server, that is fine, but that does _not_ mean it will work from OME :-)

The reason is that for security reasons we make you go through an additional hoop to enable it in OME.  Lot's of companies are sensitive to the security implications of allowing RDP or ActiveX from a browser app.

What you have to do is go to the OME preferences and check the checkbox to allow this feature.  It should install a few small ActiveX controls to make it work.  Once this is done, you can go to a server in the device tree and the RDP option will be enabled.

I think you should also see some sort of a Dell ActiveX client program in the Add/Remove programs section of your Windows control panel.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rob.  Bad news is, I DO have it enabled in OME!  I can use the RDP option only if I am on my management server.  BUT when I try to use it from my own workstation, that is where I run into trouble.  IE doesn't respond and Firefox errors out.  This did not use to be the case.  I can't imagine what's changed on my workstation that would prevent either of these two browser apps to respond in this manner.

Ok, a few things here.

I think there may be a bug in that we are doing a DNS name resolution check on the server name that is displayed in the device tree before we attempt the RDP session.  Not sure if we need to do this.  So we will review and see if we need to make a change in the next release.

But for now....

When you look at Add/remove programs on your workstation, do you see the Dell ActiveX client program installed on your workstation as well?  It must be there.

And, can you ping the server from your workstation that you are trying to RDP to?  Use the name that is listed in the device tree.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

I have both the ActiveX Client Program and the ActiveX Controller, by Dell, on my workstation.  Yes, I can ping the servers I'm attempting to RDP to.

Thanks!

Having said that, I tried to do a REPAIR on the client but the system cannot find the installation file?  Is this worth uninstalling and reinstalling and if so, where do I get the installation file?

Yeah, probably worth it.  So you can do RDP from your other client/workstations running OME.

Try this:

You can pull the install files from the host by doing the following…

1. Browse to… https://*host name*:2607/Web/Dell.OpenManage.ActiveXSetup.CAB

2. Save cab file.

3. Extract contents of cab file (must extract both sets of msi and exe files, the .inf file is not needed).

4. Run ClientProgramSetup.exe and ControllerSetup.exe.

Also, you can check in IE -> Tools -> Manage Add-ons (make sure to show all add-ons). The ActiveX controls should be listed in the add-ons for IE.

Good luck,

Rob

*SIGH*  Shows up in IE Add Ons, but not in Firefox.

Still getting that error in Firefox.  IE made some progress . . . I can open an rdp session on ONE of my servers (out of about 90).

When I run the .exe files, they just want to extract the file again.  Am I doing something wrong?

Ah, yes, well, no Active X on FF of course :-)   You will need to use IE if you want to use the RDP right click.

Thanks!

Well, that's not a problem, but I just wish I could get it to work with IE properly!

Ah, ok, got it.  Yeah, something seems fishy here.  If you get at least one RDP launch working then it means you are installed ok, etc.

What version of IE are you using?  I may have to punt you over to support to open a ticket so they can dig around a bit more (800-945-3355 ).

Sorry KBeau, I must have misunderstood :)

I was thinking you had the ActiveX control installed on the workstation and running from IE.

Help me understand what I'm missing.

thx!

You got it right Rob.  Perhaps I have not been as clear and concise as I could be and I apologize for that.

I do have ActiveX installed on my workstation and I am running IE from same, but for reasons I can't comprehend, I can only RDP from the OME app to a few servers out of all of my servers.  OME simply does not respond to my right click, Application Launch, Open Remote Desktop command.

From the management server it's pretty much the same story.  I haven't tested each and every one of my servers to see which one successfully opens the RDP window from OME, but the majority of them do not.

I'm not sure what this means.

Regards,

KBeau

Full version is 8.0.7601.17514

And, just for grins I tried Opera and Safari browsers too.  Not surprisingly, they did not work.  But, I had to say I tried!

Thanks Rob!
