Tower ECT1250 Upgrading PSU

1. I've seen a few posts recommending the 460w HU460EBS-00 PSU via Dell, but am unable to find this part on the official site. They list a 460w PSU (Dell part CPX-0FFD6) is that the same thing (I also see a 500w Dell part CPX-5K7J8)? And if not, is Ebay the only solution for acquiring the 460w HU460EBS-00 PSU?

2. Are there any better/safer upgrades than the above, or has anyone had success with a particular product?

you can use these for ECT1250

Inspiron 3020/3030 460W PSU =
4H6F4 Acbel
5W40K Huntkey
VTG94 Chicony

Dell 460W Power Supply | Dell USA is incorrect.  that is an ATX psu for older Dell XPS 8700 etc.

Dell 500W Power Supply | Dell USA is also incorrect.  that is Dell TFX psu for XPS8940 etc.

ECT and the other new dells use proprietary SFX psu

@treckle so far it’s been good, I haven’t seen any issues on my end. It’s mostly related to my graphics card arm with the drivers I think. It fits straight in with no issue. You can use the same screws as well (Althought they give you some in case and some zip ties).

Don't buy the one I linked earlier. It's not a match. I'm returning it.

@redxps630 Hi red, are saying that the Acbel, Huntkey and Chicony psu's DO work for the ECT1250 but the Dell 460w doesn't? Or just that none of the 460w's work for the ECT1250 because of the proprietary nature? ty you for clarifying for me . . . this has been a long (as in several days!) info journey to see if I can upgrade from my original 180w psu

@howardwickz , Yes. The stock Dell ECT1250 comes with the 180W PSU. The link I sent was where I bought the 460w psu from on Amazon. It’s an approved 80 Plus Bronze. Comes with two 4 pins, two 6+2 pins, and one 8 pin. It’s a wider body from the Inspiron 3020. However, it is able to fit well in the chasis and you can use the same screws you had for the 180w psu.

@Longeli079 Quick reply! thanks! So how does the pin array match w/ the 8 and 4 pin set up on the 180w stock psu? Do you only use the 8 and the 4 leaving the others unplugged? That is the only thing that I'm still trying to wrap my head around. lol

Of course! The 180w PSU is only the 8 pin and the cpu 4 pin. Since the 460w from the 3020 Inspiron is practically the same only just with some additional plugs- you use your 8 pin. When it comes to the 4 pins, since you have two, you only need to use 1, since they were designed for the same thing. You can use either one and it’ll work the same. Same goes for the 6+2 pins. There is two of them, but if your using graphics cards, you only need one. Installing is very easy to do! If you do have any other questions, feel free!

it is not just wattage but the specific design and generation of psu.

there are at least three different mutually incompatible Dell oem psu.

from legacy ATX 24 pin 460w psu for XPS 8700 to TFX 6 pin 460w psu for XPS 8940 to the current SFX 8 pin 460w psu.

they all look quite different from each other in form factor.  just beware vendor may post incorrect generic image.  always ask for actual pic of item you want to order.

For the current design, look for the characteristic stamp in psu body.

@Longeli079 These are the answers I have been searching days to get. Thanks for the pic as well! 2 more questions: It's been about 3 weeks since your first install post - still happy and working? Also, what Nvidia RTX series graphics card are you running? I was thinking about the 3050 as an upgrade to the onboard Intel Graphics.
