8200 NOISE NOISE NOISE... :-(

October 22nd, 2001 01:00

It is the same with my new 8200. Dell sent a CPU cooling fan, which did nothing. The repair tech said it was the fan housing and shroud (that green megaphone deal) that was vibrating. I called Dell again and the rep said live with it, he does not know how to send a fan housing. So I posted a note a day or so ago & sent an e-mail to Dell support. The automated reply gave instructions on how to track down a noisy part. I did so by following their instructions on unpluging the CPU fan, and wella, no more nasty noise. But obviously I had to plug the fan back in so the system does not overheat. I have forwarded the whole note to Dell Support. If they cannot get it fixed within the return period, I will send it back and eat the shipping.

Good Luck, maybe if enough people tell em they have a problem, they will fix it. I hope they do it soon, cause other than the noisy fan, I really like the machine.

before i start.... if you do it you do it at your own risk, I'm not going to take any responsabilities if you damage your dimension :-)

ZERO: turn PC off and UNPLUG the electricity cables

FIRST: open the case

SECOND: do you see the green plastic covering the CPU? well, take it out from the case (no screws needed.

THIRD: to make it easier, unplug the electricity cable of the cooler from the motherboard

FORTH: now you have the cooler inclusive green part in your hands. you can easily divide the black cooler part and the green plastic. Do not use any force, no screws... just find the right position and separate the 2 parts

FIFTH: now you have only the green plastic in your hands. to reduce or even eliminate those vibrations you have to put onto the boarders (where the green part will touch the black cooler) something soft, f.eg. some adhesive tape. be aware NOT to cover the two holes which are in fact the mechanism to hold the green part + cooler together.

you are done! plug in again the electricity cable of the cooler, of the pc... and should you go on hearing the noise go back to point 5!

Hehe ok now that sound good.
But I prefer that DELL finds a solution for this problem.

Actually I am thinking about changing the hole case with another one NOT from DELL :)
