Can I upgrade Dell 660 from i5-3330 at 3.0 GHz to I7-3770 at 3.5Hz?

I have a Dell 660 with i5-3330 @3.0 GHz, can I upgrade it to i7-3770 @ 3.4 GHz,  if yes, what do I need to do?

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi JZLI1998,

The manuals indicate the system supports up to an i5.

The Inspiron 660 does not support any i17 processors, only i3 and i5, 2nd and 3rd generation processors.

Hi Osprey4,

Thanks for your response

The specification indicates that  Dell 660 system support up to an i5. In reality, can it support an i7?

Hi, SHESAGORDIE,

I did some digging, Dell 660 use Intel B75 chipset, which is compatible with 3rd gen i7 processors. So, I wonder why Dell 660 does not support i7?

That's something that only Dell Engineering can answer.

I contacted Dell Tech support, after an initial NO, the response is: "we have not tested this motherboard with i7 processor, however the motherboard supports i7, but we do not recommend to upgrade the processor."

I would like to do the same thing...

Did you ever try upgrading?

The answer is absolutely not.  Any damage done to the motherboard VRM etc is not covered under warranty.

Humm... in regards to the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) do you have the differences handy between the two chips and why this MB would not support this chip upgrade?

Thank you for your reply.

These systems are not server boards with removable VRM modules.  The type of information you are asking for is not disseminated to  the public ever. Any processor other than the one shipped with the unit is not covered under warranty and any damage or non functioning resulting from a change of critical components is not covered under warranty.

I appreciate your reply but I also understand that it would "void the warranty" ~ it would be nice if someone has tried this and what were their results.

Why would anyone ruin a motherboard to find out that an unsupported processor is not valid.:emotion-3:
