Cannot record audio from net on Inspiron 530 - diagnosis "no sound card"

I have a new Inspiron 530, using Vista.

A downloadable software package which has worked fine on other PCs - http://www.roemersoftware.com/ - won't record and picks up no sound to record off the internet. It's intended to record audio from the net. The software package comes up with the diagnosis that my PC "has no soundcard".

Now, I'm not a techie. I need things explained simply. But surely any new PC has a soundcard? (Though I would not know one if I saw one). Or is it something my new PC might not have, and I have to buy one? It's not listed as such in the components I bought.

Or if there's bound to be a soundcard - I mean, I can HEAR sound from the net - how can I get that software working? It does work straight away on other PCs I've had.

The current Dell's with Integrated Audio DO NOT have the "System Mixer" or "What You Hear" option and thus you cannot record streaming audio.  The only option, that I know of for Vista, is to install a SoundBlaster PCI sound card.  The least expensive option is the $30 Audigy SE sound card (you can even get this card at most Wal-Mart's).  One drawback with ANY PCI sound card is you will not have the front panel headphone and mic capabilites.

Thanks Fireberd. While that's a real problem for me (why have they done it? - never mind!) at least you've given a very clear reply. Thanks.

Thing is, I really need to do both: to record streaming audio, and also to have the mic and phones front option. So both are not possible and it's necessary to choose, if I understand?

The Dell front panel connections are through a proprietary and undocumented cable/connector.  It's possible for someone with electronics knowledge to trace out the connections to the front panel headphone and mic connections and wire in a connector to a sound card that supports those connections - sort of possible but not very probable.

OK, thanks again. What a pity that a newer technological creation can't do what older ones can. I'll have to choose which of the two to have on this PC, looks like.
