Com Port Conflict -- modem unusable

Having a 'com port conflict' when trying to access modem on Dimension 2400 system with Windows XP. Have chatted with customer reps for several hours and no resolution. Modem Helper runs diagnostics and returns 'error 67- com port conflict detected'... ran diagnostics a 2nd time and error message is 'error 85 --Unresolved Software Configuration Issue ...hardware passed, but com port is not accessible.' Have tried reloading modem drivers, even restored system to an earlier date to see if problem would clear... nothing works. There is a dial tone when a phone is plugged into one jack and line in the other jack. Doesn't seem like a modem problem, but not sure. The last rep said may have to reload the operating system. I want to try another modem before that...by the way, I even moved the modem to another PCI slot, still no good. Has anyone seen this before ? The modem worked fine for 2 years and no fax software has been loaded. Just all of a sudden, decided to go belly-up. Any suggestions ???? Please help. Thanks .

P.S. This frustration will drive me to GATEWAY !!

Have you recently installed PDA software?

Try uninstall and reinstall your ISP software that uses the modem. (aol, netscape etc.).

If the system is out of warranty, spend $20 & buy a new modem.

If it is under warranty, then Dell should replace the modem as you have already done the appropiate troubleshooting.

Either way, this is a hardware failure of the modem.

I  bought a cheap modem on eBay, it asks me to run a  Dos utility  provided on disk called
EZSTART.exe.  This program must run in DOS without running Windows and must run before
installing the modem.  I need to know how to run DOS without Windows !  Plug and play does not seem to recognize the modem. I thought I could just install the modem, use the 'add hardware' wizard and be done with it. The port and IRQ assignments would be automatic.  I am really at my wits end !  Please help !   It's a Motorola 56k v.92 modem.
