Thanks for the response. I have already looked there, it says I have COM1 (doesn't say what is on COM1) and LPT1. However, when I look at the modem in device manager, it says that the modem is on COM2.
I though that there were 4 com ports?

Thanks for the clarification. Hardware is not "my thing" and I want to be sure that I have all the information before my friend comes over to help with installing the new modem.

Since you are replacing one modem with the other, you should have no problems. Remove the current modem in device manager, shut down, physically remove the existing modem and then follow the instructions that come with the new modem to install it.

I considered an external hardware modem, but didn't want another "thing" to take up desk space and an electrical outlet.
