COM port questions

Erik,

Thanks for the response. I have already looked there, it says I have COM1 (doesn't say what is on COM1) and LPT1. However, when I look at the modem in device manager, it says that the modem is on COM2.

I though that there were 4 com ports?

Marti, right-click "My Computer", choose properties, select Device Manager and click the + in front of ports.

Erik,

Thanks for the clarification. Hardware is not "my thing" and I want to be sure that I have all the information before my friend comes over to help with installing the new modem.

Com1 would be your serial port. You do have 4 com ports available, but you need to have hardware installed that uses com ports first.

Since you are replacing one modem with the other, you should have no problems. Remove the current modem in device manager, shut down, physically remove the existing modem and then follow the instructions that come with the new modem to install it.

I have a XPS-T500 and installed a USR Sportster external modem on it with no problem at all. Easiest hardware install I ever did.Plugged it into my serial port and it configured as Com 1.

Sarah,

I considered an external hardware modem, but didn't want another "thing" to take up desk space and an electrical outlet.

Thank for the input.
