com ports that don't work

I need to install a palm pilot, but someone deleted the com ports. When I add a new one, the Palm Desktop software or the Palm Dock doesn't recongnize the com port. It shows a window which is suppoded to have a list of com ports to choose from, but it's a blank window

Make sure your serial port(s) is enabled in the BIOS.

I did try that, but it was set ok. I can add ports using ports in the control panel, but they aren't active for some reason. Its the weirdest thing.

If the serial port is enabled in the BIOS, then it should be automatically detecting in Windows. What do you have listed in Device Manager under Ports (COM and LPT)? Try removing any ports listed here, reboot, go to Safe Mode, and ensure that there are no COM ports listed in Device Manager here either. Then reboot again, and let Windows redetect them.
