Computer not recognizing an e reader

​I have an older Dell that I am happy with. Apparently it is too old to recognize e readers. Other than paying Dell $90.00 to maybe repair this, does anyone have a solution?​

Problem resolved. It seems that I was misinformed about which selection to make on my ereader when plugging into the computer. My local librarian found this. Way too simple for anyone to question.

What operating system is your older Dell running?  What make/model of e-reader are you trying to install?

First--make sure the reader is turned on. It is not recognized until it is active. It shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer similar to an SD drive or thumb drive and does not need drivers. You need to mention the operating system, exact model of the computer and the e reader & how you connected it to the computer and if you are using the connection cable that came with the reader. First place to look for help is the e reader's support web site. This is not something for Dell to fix.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 series w/ Windows XP.  I use Mozilla. I have a Pandigital Novel. I use the cable that came w/ the reader. I tried connecting to all my usb ports.

I have read as much info as I could find. Spoke w/ techs from Dell, Pandigital, Adobe and Calibre.. The Dell tech took over my computer and could not find the connection.

Why do you want to connect to your computer? An e reader is a standalone device not a computer device. It does not need to connect to a computer to use.  Contact Pandigital for help.

How do you expect me  to download books? I live in the country, I want to get books through a library. If you read mt post you would see that I have been digging deep for information. Are you going to be helpful or question my intelligence?

Sorry I was not familiar with pandigital. We are just users like you who try to help other users. The manual is not available to non users. I'm surprised that the pandigital support people couldn't help you. Your reader is supposed to have its own wireless network adapter that you should be able to connect to your wireless router without connecting to a computer. That way you would have Internet access and download directly to your reader.  When you connect to the computer, make sure the computer is ON and the reader is fully charged. Turn the reader on and see if the computer sees it by opening Windows Explorer. It should be listed as a drive under My Computer. Sorry I could not help you more. I have a Kindle and it has its own wireless connection to the Internet. Much easier!

From the pandigital site: Q: How do I add media to My Library? A: You can download media from Barnes & Noble, import media from your SD card, or copy media files from your computer.

That sounds like you can log into your acct at Barnes & Noble using your computer, download what you want to your computer and copy to your reader or to an SD card to use in the reader.

Yes, this would all be resolved w/ a wireless router which I do not have. Or a sd card. Again, my computer does not recognize the ereader. At all, under any circumstances. As I mentioned before, I have read info from various sources and spoken to various techs. I would not have posted a question if I had not tried may other avenues. Yes, I can download to my computer, but there it sits. Therein lies my problem. I am trying to avoid paying Dell to possibly fix this problem.  I had hoped that someone more tech savvy than myself might have an answer.

You would be throwing money away by asking Dell to solve this. Dell cannot do anything for you. And your computer is well out of warranty so it is useless to contact Dell about this even if your usb ports are not working. Plug something else into the usb ports--keyboard, mouse,thumb drive, etc. If those work the problem is not your computer. The problem is the reader. You do not have the system requirements for it. You must have a wireless network according to their support site. Return it and get something else. Kindles have their own wireless and don't use yours. You must be in a location that can access their Whispernet.

One thing to consider--buy an inexpensive SD card reader and an sd card to use to transfer files. That connects with usb too, so make sure your ports are working on the other equipment. If your computer is really old, it might be time to replace it. It really is time to consider a wireless router and your own wireless network. Your Internet Provider can set that up for you for a fee or get a friend to help. It is not as hard as it seems with the new routers available now. Your old computer will connect to the wireless router using the same ethernet cable you use now.
