Couple of Q's and an inquiry...

Got a few Q's here...

First is about my XPS 420. This is the first of 2 PC's I am getting, second will be ordered next month. I got the 420 w/ the 8800 GTX video card. I notice that after about 5-10 minutes of gaming, I get a nice, gentle heat coming from the back of the unit. My desk has a courtesy panel so while cool air comes in from the floor to the front of the unit, the heat disipates out from under the desk, basically in my face. This is a gentle heat, no smoking, no flames, no hair dryer. But it is enough heat that after gaming for an hour, the temperature in the room has raised at least 5-7 degrees. I'd like to know if this is normal, but before answering read on...

When my Dell was being delivered by DHL, I got a call from a stranger in the industrial part of North Kansas City asking me if I bought a computer and then informed me it was sitting on the side of the road. He watched it fall off the back of a DHL truck. After yelling at the DHL driver many times, I opened the unit to inspect it and cannot find any sign of damage to the unit - inside or out. I used it extensively for over a week and no problems at all; I absolutely love the performance. Unless someone can tell me that the heat mentioned above could be somehow be related to possible unseen damage, I have to take my hat off to Dell and their wonderful packaging. It really saved the day.

Q #2:

After reading the horror story with DHL above, I intend to get another computer in the next month. One thing will make me buy from another company in a heartbeat: Can I get Dell to ship using another company other than DHL?!? If not, then I can't take another chance with sloppy logistics and will have to find a company that can provide me with another shipper. I know it wasn't Dell's fault that DHL's driver was not attentative, but please say Dell has another shipping option.

Finally, I'd like to compliment Dell: their packaging saved a new PC. I also know that Dell builds a quality machine. My company has not purchased anything other than Dells for years. We still have Dell servers bought back in 2000 that are still running strong, non-stop, 24x7, for 8 eight years. Thanks!

The heat is normal and it shows that the fans are doing their job keeping the heat out of the case.  The video card/cards also blow the hot air out the back and not into the case like days of old.  Just make sure you have plenty of ventilation.

I hate DHL.  I watched them throw my 30" monitor out the back of the truck.  It hit the ground hard enough that the corner of the box was busted open and the styrofoam was cracked into pieces.  I yelled at the driver and we opened the box right there on the spot to see what damage was done.  The driver just laughed and said if there was any damage I would have to take it up with DHL and that he was only the driver.  I emailed a complaint to my sales guy about DHL but I have no idea if anything was done.

I ordered a 1520 for the kids. I work from home and decided to go out for lunch as I often do. Lo and behold there is a box at my doorstep. Didn't even bother to knock or ring the doorbell...

I know it would not have been my problem "eventually" (can't imagine how long I would have been on the phone), had it been stolen, but we all pay for stuff like this in higher costs...

I too could do without the service of DHL.  I have had a few bad experiences with this shipper and rather use another shipper if I was ordering a new computer system.

Also, I join in with those asking if Dell would provide their customers options for using different shippers.  I am sure some customers including myself would pay extra for a shipper of choice when ordering their new computer system.

I am not pleased with the lack of a choice of shippers when ordering a new computer system.

I'm surprised a signature wasn't required for the delivery, something more expensive like a computer.

The monitor with my computer I just got recently was lost in shipment, at a Federal Express depot. The computer came and I was waiting on the monitor, tracking it; it didn't ship so I called. Fed Ex couldn't locate it. Unidentifiable or stolen I'd guess. I was told also that if shipping tags come off they return packages to Dell (though the tags are on pretty securely). But that was between the shipper and Dell, so Dell just credited my account once they confirmed the package was missing with Fed Ex.
