CPU Usage is extemely high when idle
My CPU usage is around 50% when idle. I have checked for spyware and adware but have found nothing. If I look in Task Manager I find a process with Image Name System and user System that is utilizing around 20 under the CPU column and monitors CPU usage of over 50%. I am running a 3.06 hyperthreading machine. Please help!!!!

Antivirus and firewall software up to date and running?

Problem is now solved thanks to Dell Tech support. Catofthenight - If you think that is normal then I suggest you get your PC checked out. At idle there is no way your system should be running at 50%. Call tech support to help you out.

When under load, the CPU in your desktop will consume roughly 60watts of power. That puts strain on your power supply, which makes it hotter, the CPU also gets hotter, and hot CPU's make mistakes, and mistakes slow down your computer. An Idle CPU consumes little power, stay cool, keeps the fan quiet, lets the powersupply do nothing, and your room doesn't get hot enough to bake cookies. Idle is good.
