Dell 620 frozen screen for over 8 hours reads, "windows loading files."

Hello.

My computer started up yesterday and simply went to a black screen with the words, "Starting windows."  But it stayed there for too long.  I shut it down manually and then restarted.  It then said, "Windows was not shut down properly etc.  Click fix (recommended) or start Windows normally.  Both options didn't work.  I tried running a diagnostic test which is only supposed to take 5 minutes but after 30 minutes I shut down again.

Any advice?  Please help.  Frustrating.

Thank you.

To be honest I'm not sure the hard drive will fix your problem.  I put a new hard drive in mine and still have the same issues as what you are describing.

Both the memory sticks seem to be working fine.  I did what you said and nothing changed.  I took the memory sticks to work and put them in my computer at work and they both worked fine.  Any more thoughts?

Hi Dell620,

Sorry about the situation. As you have mentioned that Geek squad suggested you to buy a new Hard drive, are you referring to a new CPU (System tower) or the hard drive in the tower?

Hi Sprint12,

I understand that you have tried the steps to check the functionlaity of the memory, I would like to know if you have tried the steps suggested by me, so as to check if the issue is with the memory sticks or memory slots on the motherboard.

Please try the steps suggested by me in my previous post to check the functionality of the memory slots on the motherboard and post the results.

Geek Squad told me that it would make more sense to buy a brand new tower.  They said it was dead and they were unable to do anything for it.
