Dell Dimension 9100 find no "boot device"
Hi All!
This is my first post in this forum and i hope you understand my bad english :emotion-1:
Before i started to work only on Apple i own this Dell and now i want to reactivate it for emailing and surfing.
Everything on this Dell is original and still working, instead of the HDD. This is a Seagate SATA Baracuda 7200 from a HP Server Client.
I have tried to install Win7 64bit on this HDD and during the installing process and several reboots everything is working fine. When i eject the win DVD and want to reboot the system, the failure "no boot device" appears. i can only press F1 oder F2.
USB Floppy is set off. Raid is set to Raid/ATA autodetect in BIOS.
For me this make no sense. Should i try winXP or is this a hardware error?
I hope anyone can help me. The Chipset on the Motherboard is Intel 945p and its nearly impossible to find any components if the Hardware is crashed.

Hello terracotta and welcome to the Dell forum. It's always helpful to include the model number of the computer you're posting about as this helps other members provide information that may be specific to that particular model. How is the boot device order set up in your computer's BIOS? Do you have any external storage devices (a USB flash drive, external hard drive, printer with a flash card reader in it, etc.) connected to the computer during the Windows 7 installation?

Hello!
The model number i found on the back side of my dell is .
The boot device order, of course i checked this first, is SATA, then the optical drive. Floppy and usb device is set to "not present".
In the Bios the SATA drive is in the list and present but it won´t boot (except windows installation process). I read in other postings that the front usb connector could cause a problem. so i plug off the panel from the motherboard and also the firewire connector. when i try to boot no other devices are connected to the computer. maybe its a problem or not, in the bios setting in the menu "boot order", the SATA drive is the first device in the list but without a number. the second device (DVD drive) is listed with the number "1", and so on.
i don´t know how i can assign the number "1" to the SATA drive, if this could be a possible failure.
on the front panel there a four led´s for possible errors. 1, 2, 3 are lightend.
in the attachement you can see the description of the error code. of course i checked these hints.
could be a low battery power of the cmos battery cause the problem. i changed the cmos battery to a nearly new one, which is working fine in an bicycle computer. so i think the battery should have enough power.

Duh, you had the model number in the thread title and I just glossed over it. :emotion-4: lol
Ok, typically when I've encountered the GGGY diagnostic LED (on a wide variety of Dell desktops) it has indicated a hard drive failure. Have you tried disconnecting the SATA power and data cables from the hard drive and reconnecting them? Which SATA controller is that drive plugged into? They all have numbers next to them on the motherboard. The controller it's plugged into also needs to be enabled in the BIOS. You could try plugging the hard drive into a different SATA controller to see if the computer will successfully boot to it then.

hi!
i have now solved the problem. i have only payed attention to the bios settings and after several minutes of concentrating :emotion-18: on the drive options, the sata drive was in first position. but the problem was still there. "no boot device".
in addition to F2 for the bios setting, you can also press F12 for the boot menu. i thought to set the boot and drive options in bios is enough was not correct. in this boot menu F12, i have to choose and highlight the sata drive and since then, the system is booting normaly and is working fine.
now i´m happy.
