Dell Dimension 9150 memory upgrade

My Dell Dimension 9150 currently has 2GB of total RAM. I want to upgrade to 4GB RAM memory. I saw the post by the Dell rep here and ordered memory according to those specs but they were apparently incomplete as the PC didn't recognize the memory and would not boot. Here is what he said it takes:

buol,

The Dimension 9100, 9150, XPS 400 PCs support two channels of four sockets
of PC3200 400MHz, PC4200 533MHz, and PC5300 667MHz DDR2 memory. The maximum
memory configuration is 4GB (four 1GB sticks).

C6796 DIMM, 1GB, DDR2, 400MHz, 128X64, 2RX8
C6844 DIMM, 1GB, DDR2, 533MHz, 128X64, 2RX8
U8622 DIMM, 1GB, DDR2, 667MHz, 128X64, 2RX8

This site agrees with the above specifications."

Here is what is in my PC now:

memory installed: DIMM, 512MB, DDR2, 533MHz, 8x64, 1Rx8 (four 512MB sticks)
 HYS64T64000HU-3.7A PC2-4200U-444-11-A1 A5E61206
 SDRAM - Infineon brand

Dell's store is messed-up as far as what will work (the suggested replacement RAM is clearly not compatible) and there looks to be an ideal set that they don't list as being compatible. So the question is what set of four 1GB sticks has worked for you to get the maximum 4GB RAM in your Dimension 9150?! It shouldn't be this difficult to find out...

Dell has listed here: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Gaming_Performance_Memory/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1155286

I'm not sure why that would not work based on the machine specs listed. Is there are reason that not all specs are listed? What spec matters in selecting a RAM stick for these PCs? In short - what do I need?...

HERE is what Crucial Memory recommends.  Crucial is guaranteed to work in Dell's and what most of the techies on here recommend for non-Dell memory.   Some non-Dell brands will not work (and apparently what Dell lists doesn't either).

This is what is listed in the Dell manual:

Memory

Type

dual-channel 533- and 667-MHz DDR2

Memory connectors

four

Memory capacities

256 MB, 512 MB, or 1 GB

Minimum memory

512 MB

Maximum memory

4 GB

Thanks for the reply. The trouble seems to be that the full specs are not revealed. I tried a 667MHz stick, which was supposed to be backwards compatible with 533MHz and 400MHz, but to no avail. The Brand should not matter, it's the configuration and spec of the chips that do. So the real issue is what spec is important, what's preventing the damned things from working? The sticks that are rated as 533MHz are typically also billed as PC4200 or PC2-4200. Any difference there? Also the 667MHz sticks are billed as PC5300 or PC2-5300. The original RAM chips in my PC are 4200. What does that mean and is that what is going on here?... It's so frustrating. There should be a clear answer.

OK, I found some RAM that works! Anyone that has a Dell Dimension 9150 can use Corsair VS1GB533D2 RAM. That's a 1G stick. The machine will accept 4 of them, however if you are running Windows XP or a 32 bit version of Vista, then you cannot access more than about 3.5G of it. I have XP Home Edition and feel lucky that mine is reading 3.5G as some users report only 3G or so. So you might want to save a bit and just order 3 of them.

These RAM sticks are spec'd as being PC4200 which might be why it's compatible. The 533mhz spec matched the RAM that was removed as well, so one or both of those specs might be the key here. here is the complete spec of the RAM that I ended up using successfully:

VS1GB533D2 Corsair  - 1GB DDR2 PC4200 533MHz 128Mx64 SDRAM 240-pin

Peace, Out...

I too have a 9150 and just put in 2 new CORSAIR DDRS Value Select1 GB sticks since my Windows XP was too slow. As I did a Start, it saw the new RAM and offered me 2 choices. Unfortunately I chose the 2nd which was to enter some manual Setup concoction.

I know a bit about PCs but not a ton. But I'm not afraid of trying stuff myself and I don't have any spare $!

So, now ALL four slots has RAM sticks in them but my DELL is STILL slow as heck. If I go to My Computer > Properties, I see Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz, 2.9 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM.

Can I ask for some help please? My PC is just as slow as it was. My IE 8 is constantly "Not Responding" during my Facebook habit / addiction.

I am vankjeff on Facebook.

Using an SSD for a boot drive would make a big difference.

I'm in the process of updating a 5150 to Windows 7, 2gb of memory and an SSD.
