Dell Optiplex 380 max RAM

Hello,

I purchased an Optiplex 380 a couple of years ago which came with 2x2GB RAM @ 1066Mhz and now I think time has come to upgrade to at least 8GB. So, I tried a kingston value ram of 4gb @ 1333Mhz and unfortunately it beeped with 1 and 3 diagnostic LEDs lit. I know that the Dell manual says a maximum of 4GB ram but I have seen people here on dell forums running 2x4GB without any problems, so according to my thinking, maybe the bus frequency is the problem? shall I try 1066Mhz? Crucial's site also suggests up to 1600Mhz so whats the confusion here?

P.S. I have latest BIOS A07 flashed.

It depends on the memory and the system. In most cases it will within a step or two (or three), but if you put 2166 memory in a system that calls for 1066, it may not clock down that much.

Hi sir,

I contact you and hope that you can help me to resolve my problem about Optiplex 380 ram:

My Optiplex 380 had 4GB of ram (4GB hynix 2rx8 pc3-10600u-9-10-b0 / hmt351u6bfr8c-h9 n0 aa) and worked correctly. I have decided to expand the ram and I plugged in free slot available new memory, Transcend ram 4GB 1rx8 ddr3 1333u. The pc doesn't start and continue to do the beep. Even with only the transcend memory, I have the same problem. The Optiplex 380 supports up to 8GB of ram (ddr3- not ecc). what is the problem? 1rx8 and 2rx8 ram are compatible in you opinion?

Best regards,
ggragnoli

You cannot mix ranks. Must be all 1R or 2R   cannot be 4R.  Cannot be buffered or registered or ecc.

I was able to install 8Gb of Ram on my Optiplex 380, of course Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit SYSTEMS says I have 8GByte of which 3GByte are usuable.  The system seems to be able to run 64 bit, but I'm still researching that and it's a different question.

I am running a 780 with the q45 express and I have bought 4 different kinds of the suggested ram for it in 4 gig sticks. none worked. all worked in my 470 vostro and so I tried the two 4 gig sticks of dell SNP531R8C/4G pc3 12800 1600 that came in my vostro in my optiplex and they work fine no matter how I put them in. the hynix equivalent is HMT351U6CFR8C-PB, the crucial equivalent is CT51264BA160B. C16F.  also if you are running 32 bit anything over 4 GB will not be used and 7 64 home and student versions will only use 8. 7 64 pro will use up to 64. limitations are in the operating system code not the mother board or chips. pretty much every 2 gig stick I have tried worked as long as they were the same.

There is no "home and student". Home Basic supports 8GB and Home Premium supports 16GB (most common). Starter is 32-bit only, supporting 2GB. Windows 7 Pro and Ent/Ult support 192GB of RAM.

The Optiplex 380 will run 64-bit in all factory-supported configurations.

I am only regergitating info from a microsoft programmer on the windows seven forum. said that there was a difference between supporting ram and using ram. basic is the student version and home refers to home premium which is available in 32 and 64 bit. in the thread he said that even though the ram shows up as usable limits in the memory mapping in the operating system prevent the computer from using more and is changeable if you are comfortable making changes in the registry. I am not positive on this because I have never tried it myself. however in my 470 vostro with win 7 64 pro I5 3450, 16Gb 1600 mhz ddr3 pc3 12800 ocz r7 ssd, never do I see a single program use more than 4 Gb RAM except windows update and with netflix running in 4 open windows 2 running silverlight 64 and two running flash, skype running in another and downloading and installing over 200 updates AMD catalyst control in overdrive, resource monitor open it barley used 11 Gb. at  this very moment it is on netflix, using 2359 MB while this optiplex has 12 GB, typing this and watching live video feed from the local ski area is using 2123 MB both have less than a gig in standby and the rest is free. so it seems to make sense. if not then what? the thread went on to say that it would use more RAM for hosting, developing or server applications. I am trying to help where I can and learn where I can as well

said that there was a difference between supporting ram and using ram

Not sure exactly what that means. Supported and Usable could be viewed as the same. However, there is a difference between what the computer supports and what the OS supports ... maybe that is what you mean. The OS, regardless of how much RAM the computer can support, is limited to the numbers I posted earlier.

however in my 470 vostro with win 7 64 pro I5 3450, 16Gb 1600 mhz ddr3 pc3 12800 ocz r7 ssd, never do I see a single program use more than 4 Gb RAM

32-bit programs installed on 64-bit OS's are limited in how much RAM they can use. 64-bit programs may be limited in many circumstances as well.

I think what I am trying to say is I didn't get any performance boost or increased system speed or higher usable  memory by going from 8 to 12 or16 gigs of RAM. win 7 pro64 will address 192. now will my home computer and my 2hundred buck video card use more than 16 gigs ever? like I said maxing everything out I barley bumped 11. unless I am trying to tax out my RAM, it never uses more than 6 or 7 Gigs. i did get results from making changes in the operating system. first by opening up the page file to installed memory x 1.5 then BCDEdit  /set truncatememory address. address is given as a decimal or a c-lang hexidecimal notation in edit boot options menu  /MAXMEM = num. changes to the OS. seems to help.

I'm trying to do what a number of people commenting here are, trying to upgrade my Optiplex 380. I did a search on Crucial and the compatible sticks were a mix of 1.35v and 1.5v. I grabbed an old version of CPU-Z and my machine has one 2GB stick of PC3-10700 and 1.5v. How is 1.5v too high? I grabbed an 8GB kit (hx316c10fbk2/8) and, as others have experienced, all I got was the beeping, no post. The kit seems to be almost the same as what you say should work and close to the same as a "compatible" crucial stick (CT4054954) according to the website. The difference between yours and what I got is the voltage. The difference between the kit and the crucial is the latency. What makes the 1.5v stick in the machine work but the new 1.5v stick be too high?

The stick you said would work (CT5285373) is out of stock. But another, almost identical spec'd stick (CT2348265) is in stock. The main difference is the latency.

I have the same query as the gentleman/woman who started the thread. The link you gave directs me to Crucial website which now says 1.5v RAM is compatible. I reside in India and returning a product is next to impossible, especially with the packages opened. So I just want to confirm whether Optiplex will work with 1.5v RAM or I should keep searching for 1.35v and take my chances. I have 2x1GB at present and I want to upgrade to 2x4GB RAM.

When I approached a service person, he gave an invaluable advice to dump the CPU and upgrade to a new one for less hassles. But upgradeable or not I am going to stick with my present CPU, hence need a good advice to make my computing experience better.

Please give me confirmation whether this is suitable http://www.amazon.in/Crucial-CT51264BA160B-240-pin-PC3-12800-memory/dp/B006YG89Q6

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

The Dell Optiplex 380 uses 1.5v for the memory. 1.35v will not work in the system

I know this thread is just a bit old but I wanted to add my two cents.

I just replaced my

two Samsung PC3-8500F 2gb (4gb total)  Part Number M378B5673FH0-CF8

with

two  Hyundai Electronics PC3-10700 4gb (8gb total) Part Number  HMT351U6BFR8C-H9

They work perfectly.

One thing I noticed is that even thought the 4 GB dimms are rated for max 667 MHz, bandwidth, Speccy (software) states 532 MHz for the dram frequency. This is the same as the 2 GB slower ram that was in the system before.

I had tried two 4 gb ddr3 pc3-12800 16mhz CRUCIAL CT51264BA160B  and they just caused the system to beep and light flash. the vendor told me it was because these were high density dimms (chips on only one side), and that Dell Optiplex 380 does not support because of the Intel g41 chipset.

the hmt351u6cfr8c-PB and  ct512 64 ba 160b.c16f are pc3-12800 low density, dual channel (take your 532 and multiply it by 2) check your buss speed. ram wont clock higher than your buss will allow. both will run at 1.35 or 1.5v depending on your system
