Demmension 2350: COM 1 Clock Timer Failed to Start/COM Port Failed to Open

I've been trying to flash a emprom, I've done this hundreds of times on other computers. All that happens is the following errors "COM 1 Clock Timer Failed to Start/COM Port Failed to Open ". I've tried setting the computer to default settings, closing all security. I'm all out of ideas, any help would be very much apprerciated.

It's not clear what you're attempting.  You mean EEPROM?  The thing that stores F2 settings and last power/error state?  I can't imagine what purpose that would serve.  The reset jumper will empty it if you want to start over.

Do you mean flashrom?  You're trying to reflash BIOS from a boot disk?  Or from a port?  Dell BIOS doesn't work like that of 'other computers'.  What you're attempting may not be possible on a Dell.

I appreciate the response, however except for my spelling I thought I was very clear. I'm trying to FLASH an EEPROM on a rewritable FLASHROM and I get the above & following messages " Dimension 2350: COM 1 Clock Timer Failed to Start/COM Port Failed to Open‏". I've tried using the F2 option to reset the BIOS, I guess I failed to mention that this was one of 5 computers networked in a Mortgage office that was networked to a server. I race cars & Flash chips to get more horsepower, not that this matters in any form way or fashion. As I said before any real help would be very much appreciated!

Ah, so you have a non-Dell hardware--the EEPROM flasher--plugged into COM 1, and the error comes up? Using the same flasher and its cable that works on other systems? (Cables can go bad.) Works on other 2350s but not THIS one?

Sorry, since you didn't specify that, Dells having EEPROMs internally, this being the Dell hardware forum, and very few users here flash EEPROMs, the operation didn't make sense.  Kinda like me telling you I had trouble with my fuel injection, without telling you I put E85 in an 86 Toyota.

COM is a simple, stable standard which should not experience incompatibilities, but if this flasher and cable work with other computers and not the 2350, you may have just discovered one. If only THIS 2350 does not work, there is a chance that at some point someone plugged something into COM 1 and damaged it.

I can't solve this for you, other than to suggest going back to one of the systems that it DID work on.
