Dimension 4600

I used the CPU that came with my 4600 and I have upgraded with no error messages at all. In fact I have done it on my 4600 about 3 times going back and forth from 7 t0 10 and 10 back to 7.

Since you mention the CPU that came with the pc.

1.- can you tell me the specs of the CPU because the pc i have a friend game ti me.

2.- 2 times trying to upgrade and i get can't install on this pc (window 10) it doesn't support NX.

maybe you can give some pointers.

NOTE.- that may users have the same problem, answers suggested "buy a new pc" in this forum.

P.S. I could be the original CPU was replace before i got it. so i have a problem.

Very Few socket PPGA478 processors from 2003 and earlier support nx.  Intel Introduced this in OCT 2004. Intel implemented the similar XD bit feature in x86 processors beginning with the Pentium 4 processors based on iterations of the Prescott core that were PLGA 775

2005 PLGA 775 and later processors have it.  Rather than trying to upgrade such an early system with AGP you need to look for an Optiplex 620 or better or Precision 380 or better.  Then you can add a $10  Pentium D 915  PLGA 775. 

The Precision 380 is the best upgrade because it comes with 375W power supply with PCI-E power and will use up to 8 gigs of DDR2 and runs windows xp, vista, 7, 8 , 10 just fine.

I'm not aware of ANY socket 478 units other than the PPGA479 mobile units that have this.

Yes upgrading (buying another pc) be very well. I have already a superior Dell desktop so i am not buying another one.

Anyway the links you sent described a type of processor that can do this (I mean they support the NX feature).

It would be then a matter to see i f  i can find one.

Just one final answer to confirm that yes it is possible, i can install windows 10. This pc has 4GB memory and that is the reason i want to install windows 10 bit 32.

I found this one RK80546PE0721M - 2.80GHZ Pentium 4 Processor. What i see in in the picture with the red arrows "socket type: mPGA478B and according to CPU_Z program it says that my PC has "Socket 478mPGA".

Then that the "B" added makes a lot of difference because if it doesn't, i will buy the CPU i found for 5 bucks.

You need the one for Socket 478.  LGA775 wont fit in your 4600.

Execute Disable Bit = NX =XD (Execute Disable Bit)

Its under Security in the Bios but only IF the processor supports it.

If the cpu does not support this it does not show up as an option.

Only the G0 stepping socket 478 version of the 551 has this.

Which means SL8JX only. NONE of the northwoods have it.

No idea which bios supports G0 stepping SL8JX.

I am not going in circles but i asked about the "B" added you didn't say anything about it.

So either you don't know or it really doesn't matter it it is an "A", "N" as i have seen some other CPU's.

The S Spec and Revision are what count. No Idea what you mean by A or N.

NX is not supported on all of the Pentium 4 511 series.

It is not clear to me that ANY other than the G0 stepping have this hence the link to impact computers version.

CPU World says SL7PK does not have NX and I am inclined to believe them.

Thanks for the reply. A previous person gave me a reference at the end (CPU) i saw a "B". Then I have seen some other letters, A, N, etc. So far the letter is not important because. I remember i have some CPU's and this one "SL7PK", according to intel :

I upgraded to the latest BIOS but still didn't see these features. Anyway the CPU run but it was too hot and windows 10 reported the same "NX" problem. As of now i will not bother because it is not much of the CPU but if the BIOS doesn't report this then windows 10 thinks it can't run.

Also i don't want to replace the heat sink. Windows 7 ultimate sees the processor supporting bit 64.
