does this "prefetch" file cause shutdown problems as well as internet disconnect problems?
I have a 2 month old Dimension 4600 - 512MB Ram . Other than a very loud "droning" or "hum" that started in the hard drive last week, it has worked fine-----until a few days ago when two other problems came up.
First problem: When I try to log off of Earthlink, it shows I have been disconnected (because of the "x" through the icon), but the phone line is still tied up and the cursor doesn't work. It takes about 3-4 minutes for the disconnect bell to sound and the phone to be free.
Second problem: About that same time, when I tried to shut down the computer, a message started coming up saying that a task is still ending. I click on "end now" and a second message comes up with the heading: "End Program - Badcdm32.exe" and states that "the program is not responding". It further states to click "cancel", if I wanted to return to Windows to check the status of the program. It also states that to choose "to end immediately", unsaved data will be lost. I found this file in the Windows/prefetch folder and wonder if it would solve the problem if all files in the folder were deleted. Since this is an ".exe" file, I wasn't sure how important it is. Actually, does anyone know what this file is for and would it be the cause of my problem of disconnecting from the internet as well as the inability to shut down the computer easily? Thanks for any help.

I could find no information on a badcdm32.exe file (or badcdm32 alone) in an Internet search so I have no idea what it is associated with. For general cleanliness, it would be prudent to scan your system for spyware. Download either Ad-aware from here and/or Spybot from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run either and delete all the spyware they identify.
It is safe to delete all files in the Prefetch folder (but do not delete the folder itself). I suspect the file is located somewhere besides only in Prefetch, but if it is spyware the programs above should locate and eliminate it.

I wasn't sure how to delete files and not the folder of "prefetch" and so just highlighted the "Badcdm.32.exe.pf" file in the folder, clicked on it and then clicked "delete". For a few seconds, it left the screen and then popped back into place. I looked in the recycle bin and it was there, also. Emptied the bin and it was gone, but it still was in the "prefetch" folder. Tried this several times and same thing happens---I cannot delete it from the folder. Could this be a backup data file that Windows won't let me delete? I looked into Spybot and read some negatives about it like: It also deletes some Windows programs like Windows Media. I am too much of a novice at this to get into something I'm not sure how to run. I didn't have problems like this with our old computer!
