error message 231

I am running microsoft xp service pack 3.  Dell support center keeps trying to update but it pops up two massages.  the first one is:"another version of this product is all ready installed. installation of the version cannot continue. to configure or remove the existing version of this product use add/remove programs. Then it says error 231 file missing pcdsrvc.pkms.  Tried restoring to a point before this but my computer tells me no changes on this date cant continue.  any help would be great.

thanks , matt

Matt,

Can you tell us what version of Dell Support Center you have installed today?  If you have version 3.0 or higher then it will look like the image below.

If it does, then please click the "gear" icon at the top and then click ABOUT to get the full version number.  Please report that back to us here.  When the application is running you can click the refresh icon (circular arrow in the green bar above the message titles) to force an update.  If this update fails again as you have indicated above, we would really appreicate a copy of the logs to help determine what is going on.  If you are willing to help us out in this regard, you could perform the following steps:

1. Click START and type the following in the run box then press ENTER:   %appdata%\PCDr

2. Navigate to the PCDr\Installer\Logs directory.

3. Zip these logs up and then private message me and I'll give you the email address to which you can send them.

You always have the option of going to the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and removing Dell Support Center.  You can then visit www.dell.com/dellsupportcenter to download and install the latest version which has had many enhancements to the installation and upgrade processes.
