explorer error

i'm having trouble with my dell demension8100 every time i get ready to shut down i get an explorer error that says (explorer has caused an error in the unknown.)and when you close the box out it tries to reload windows as its shutting down. is there anything that can be done on this matter? thanks

It would be helpful to know which version of Windows you have. Have you shutdown all of the programs running in the background to see if you can isolate the program that is causing the problem? (Use Cntrl-Alt-Delete and shut down all programs except systray, explorer, and one other of your choosing. If the problem goes away, then you know it was one of the prorgrams that you shut down prior to trying to shut down the computer. Repeat the process, leaving one more program open each time until you isolate the background program that is causing the problem).
