How to Install Card Reader?

Hi,

There is no driver required for Media card reader,  it seems like the device is not getting detected, check in BIOS if it is detected, if not you will have to reseat the cables  for the drive.

Not sure if I’ve understood your post correctly, assume you mean by “after reinstalling my XPS 200” that you have reinstalled Windows on your PC?

The MCR should be identified in the Device Manager under USB Controllers as a USB Mass Storage device & if you have WXP SP2 the device requires Microsoft Windows driver USBSTOR.sys (version 5.1.2600).

Each Card Reader associated with MCR should be identified in the Device Manager under Disk Drives, each with the drivers disk.sys, drvmcdb.sys & PartMgr.sys all these drivers should be on the Windows disk that came with your PC.

Since you report driver is missing it sounds like you have already looked in Device Manager & checked MCR USB Mass Storage device Properties? Did you check General tab to ensure Use this device is enabled, also click on Driver tab & try Update Driver?

The device is detected by Windows XP, however, the driver installation fails. Speaking of the BIOS, do not expect the card reader to be listed there since it is not a drive.

Having a look at the cables might is basically not a bad idea. Just in this case, the card reader is (i) detected by Windows XP and (ii) not directly accessible since the CD/DVD drive would have to be removed before.

@BELL BOY: Your assumption is corret, I did indeed reinstall Windows XP on my PC using the recovery CD provided by DELL.

Regarding USBSTOR.sys et al., I will check whether these drivers are available on my system. Right now, Windows XP recognizes the card reader just as unknown device, not as a mass storage device.

And yes, I have already tried to update the driver etc. I have already requested DELL to provide me with a driver (or another solution) but I am still waiting for a reply.

My dear friend walter2008, the memory card reader will be showing up in BIOS, look for Onboard or integrated devices in BIOS it should, if it doesnot show up there, reseating the cable should work.

@KarthikAdla: I am very sorry, there is no card reader option in the BIOS available, I have just gone through the BIOS again. It seems to be a software problem anyway since the device is recognized as such, it is "just" not properly detected and installed.

Click Start > Search > All Files & Folders > in the upper (top) box, either type in the files names I have given you (or simply copy & paste each from my post) then click the search button.

If they are not found then you certainly are missing the required drivers. If they are detected they should all be located in folders C:\i386 & C:\Windows\system32\drivers

Some of the driver files you mentioned are indeed not available on my system. Is there an easy way to install them?

The device manager itself ask for an inf file...

@KarthikAdla: Yes, this evening, I opened my PC, removed the CD drive and disconnected/reconnected the cable between the mainboard and the card reader.

Exactly what driver(s) are missing?

Use the Search All Files & Folders again to check if the usbstor.inf file is present or not. This file should contain the all-important following script

ClassGUID={36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

provider=%MSFT%

LayoutFile=LAYOUT.INF

DriverVer=07/01/2001,5.1.2600.0

If file is present then open it & check against the above text. If it’s missing then it’s very likely that your Windows reinstall wasn’t successful?

And if you are not getting a request to insert your WXP SP2 disk when trying to update the driver then it looks like you are going to have to reinstall WXP SP2 again. Did you first download the DELL chipset driver? I’d suggest, if not already done, you read the Windows XP forum posts B4 again reinstalling WXP SP2.
